Volunteer Experience Essay
Youth Volunteer Corps of Greater Kansas City has impacted my life the most. It has sparked my passion for giving back to the community and has influenced me to continue volunteering when I go to college.
With this group, I had the opportunity to go to the local Willa Gill Center and package CARE packages for the community. The CARE packages contained basic needs such as toothpaste and shampoo, and special items like nail polish and makeup. After we packaged everything, we were able to sort out clothing and cans that were going to be distributed the next day. Working behind the scenes and helping the workers prepare was very rewarding.
I also worked at a local animal rescue center. I do not enjoy working with animals, but I put that aside to

It was my favorite activity because it was a celebration for the homeless. It gave them hope and essentials before they had to endure the cold winter. A group of us were able to pass out clothing, bedding, and toys to those who waited. I also helped serve holiday meals to people, which included turkey, macaroni, and pumpkin pie. It was rewarding to see everyone eating nice meals while a band played holiday music in the background. For a moment, everyone could forget their situations and enjoy the presence of others. At times, it was overwhelming because we were helping hundreds of people, but in the end I enjoyed it all. I learned the most from this event because I saw parents that were trying to provide for their infants and people who had homes but could not pay for their basic utilities, all desperately waiting in line to receive clothing and bedding. This gave me a new definition of what homeless means.
Altogether, being in the Youth Volunteer Corps group has allowed me to mature by seeing how much poverty is around and making me realize how grateful I should be. I have met new people and have become friends with people I thought I would never talk to. It has showed me how much fun you can have if you keep an open mind. The experiences I have gained will help me in the future as I move away from home and deal with diverse personalities and people from all walks of life. I

Volunteering for service hours changed my outlook on life. I worked with the Hydrocephalus Association in both eleventh and twelfth grade. The Hydrocephalus Association focuses on three things community, clarity, and cure. Hydrocephalus is a condition defined by an abnormal, excessive accumulation of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) within the cavities of the brain. Some people with this condition can live a normal life being unnoticeable while other have difficulties. The association works on awareness to find a cure, clarity in helping families further understand the condition, and a community which will always be supportive. Service hours can sometimes be a hassle but once I started volunteering with that association it became fun because I was…

For my service this year, I was involved with Applecross Opal Nursing Home. Opal age care was a great help to me in opening my eyes to the desperate need for an extra pair of hands and the importance of nursing homes. Not only to the individual admitted in, but also to their families and friends. As I would arrive at 12.00 every time, I would go straight into lending a hand with lunch. Handing out the meals, packing away, cleaning up and keeping an eye on a few of the residents was my first job done. Then I would wonder through the compound talking to the residents, playing and colouring in with them and I would gather and assist them to and from their rooms. With all these jobs, you had to keep a look out for and take extra care with some of the more dependant residents.…

When I was in the eighth grade I went on a weeklong mission trip with my youth group to Houston, Texas. This trip was a turning point in my life spiritually and mentally, completely changing my thought process of inner city missions at the time. There is a ministry there called CSM that invites youth groups to come and they will take the group to certain places in the city where they can serve and get a feel for the need there and many places. This trip was very impacting for me and I am still looking back on it and realizing the benefits.…

I remember when we hosted the Make a difference day event for Thurgood Marshall. It was a busy day for all of us. It was also a big event. There were a lot of vacant houses in that area. Our job was to make a list of the vacant houses and to measure it for board-ups. Measuring it took about a week. Lighting observation was a challenge for some of us because we had to wait till dark to find out which light works so that we can write down the address. Some people didn’t like how we were going around the same area multiple times because they didn’t know what we were trying to do. After that some of us had to drive around morning and afternoon to find out the most common routes that everyone takes to go and from school. I couldn’t participate in that because I had school the same time. On the big event day, we secured 10 vacant properties, cleared three blocks of trash, removed a block of graffiti from a vacant property, and created visible safe routes signs. We hit some rough patches on the way but we all worked together to overcome it. It was a very long and exhausting day but we all were happy because we all felt the joy of making a difference in the…

I realized there are people out here that don’t get to walk into a store and go shopping. Reality was hitting me and it was overwhelming. I wanted to do more and go to more stops to help more people. As a teen I participated in community service work. It was one of the best learning experiences I ever had. I learned the importance of hard work and helping those less fortunate than me. I am not the only one who has benefitted from volunteer work according to John Frank in his article "The Benefits of Community Service for Teenagers." Frank writes about the many benefits of volunteer work teens can expect to have, and my experiences with volunteer work show me that Frank is right.…
