Ican Bike Program Analysis
Volunteering has been a passion of mine since I was young, and as I have grown up I have come to the realization that the opportunities I have enjoyed the most and felt that I made the biggest impact were activities where I helped children. One of my first major experiences volunteering with children was in the summer of 2013 when I volunteered with iCan Shine in their iCan Bike program. This program truly opened my eyes to what I was passionate about and made making a decision about what I wanted pursue as a career in the future much easier.
This amazing program teaches children with disabilities how to ride a two-wheel bicycle. At first, most of the children were discouraged and thought that they would never be able to ride a bike alone, but the volunteers were there with them every step of the way to ensure their success and boost their confidence. I will never forget the smiles on the kids’ faces and joy in their eyes at the end of the week when they could finally ride a bike all by themselves. Specifically, I am passionate about working with children, so I would like to specialize in pediatrics. I also hope that improving my fluency in Spanish during college will allow me to broaden my horizons allow me to help Spanish-speaking children who live in the United States or possibly even move abroad and work in a Spanish-speaking country.
