How Do You Measure Success Essay
Christiane Buniel
Carl Joseph Stout Scholarship
A measure of success is how happy a person is. For some, they’d feel their happiest when they have luxurious items. However, this isn’t true and is not a real measure of success. Happiness for most people is a loving family. If it’s someone’s definition of success, then family is what defines their success. For others, this might mean trying new things and a lifestyle that supports it. Success is tied in with happiness because they are both highly subjective.
Health can be considered a defining factor in success. People feel unsuccessful if they, or someone they love, aren’t healthy. For instance, can father feel successful if his child is ill? This is why doctors, nurses, and hospitals are so important. Not only do they allow people to live longer, but to make people to feel successful in their life.
Finally, it means overcoming hardships. No one wants rough times with tears and pain. Whoever has come through the pain feels like he or she has accomplished something. Someone that has overcome an obstacle achieves a measure of success. So who could understand the meaning of success if they did not experience disappointment? Light wouldn’t exist without darkness and success would not be truly achieved without failure. But we all hope that failure is only temporary.
People want to achieve success and organize to reach it. But, with a narrow interpretation of success, they find themselves going the wrong way, missing out on opportunities, and happy moments along the road.

Success is to achieve something that we truly long for. “Sometimes failure is more beneficial than success.” Written by Darren Roberts. This is a very inspiring quote for all species of mankind. I agree rightfully with this quote as it states that even sometimes there are ups and downs, falls and disruptions in life, but those problems make us even stronger and prevent us from making the same mistake and make us more successful in life. Although, if losing things sometimes make us closer to something we want, we must make a go for it. As In Homers’, The Odyssey, and Nancy’s’, The House of The Scorpion, the main characters deal with personal loss and face many hardships, but finally reach to their own respected homes and families, safe and soundly.…

While some people equate having wealth and power as being successful, that is often not the case. Although earning and having money is an important aspect of our economy and existence, earning large sums of money is not an accurate way of measuring nor determining if a person is successful or not. Those who find true satisfaction in life, regardless of their wealth or social status, are the ones who have reached true success. As put into words by award-winning author Maya Angelou, "success is liking yourself, liking what you do, and liking how you do it." True success is achieved when an individual has reached a point in their life where their goals and achievements are meaningful and…

Most people measure success monetarily. We spend the majority of our lives working towards success (“Defining success”). The word “success” is defined in the Merriam Webster dictionary as the attainment of wealth, favor, or eminence. Individuals who would be considered successful in this generation are Kim Kardashian or even Justin Bieber. These celebrities simply live in the moment, without thinking about what their goals are. Everyone wants to be known for something. Success takes several different forms but because of societal issues we have lost sight of its true definition. What does success mean to you? Success is the ability to overcome challenges and to get to your desired outcome. Success depends on you, it is dependent only on what your desired outcome is. According to Abraham Lincoln success is expressed as “always bear in mind that your own resolution to succeed is more important than any other.” Abraham is expressing the importance of the resolution of success. I agree with Abraham there is nothing better than the resolution to succeed. To be more successful you have to make changes in your life, some of these changes are not so easy and conflict with yourself but in order to succeed there must be a change. The media and today's society have brainwashed the citizens of the world to believe the deceit that in order to be successful you need to have the largest house, newest car, clothes, five star dining, and to travel every other month. This is how success is defined, this is what many aim for. But it is not however how I was raised, my mom taught me that the definition of success, similar to life is in the eye of the beholder, and most importantly success should be a synonym for a person's happiness.
