As a child growing up, I was always amazed by the works of those in the criminal justice field. While those around me hated the police, and always had something negative to say about them, I on the other hand didn’t. I saw them as human beings, who put their life at risk on a daily base just to make our society a much safer place to live in, and I guess others had failed to see that. As I got older my love for the criminal justice field only grew deeper, I found myself watching a lot of criminal justice shows like Dateline on ID, 20/20, Snapped, Homicide Hunter with Joe Kenda and later on How to get away with murder and killer couples. From there on I realized that it was not the law enforcement I was interested in but investigating crime scene.…
I left the industrial field in 2011 and went back to school to pursue a career in education where I could combine two things that I have a strong desire for; helping adolescents and teaching the social sciences. While attending…
On Friday March 10th, I participated in a Police ride along at the University of Maryland. I was placed with Officer M. Adornetto during the hours of 10:30 p.m. to 2:30 a.m. Officer Adornetto took me around College Park and showed me what his typical night on the job is like in the beat that he is assigned to. Although the night was slow because of spring break, we still had a lot of interesting calls that we encountered that evening. As I observed officer Adornetto throughout Friday night I learned much more about what a police officer has to deal with every day of their lives.…
In modern society there are many challenges to police work. They can be very overwhelming but many grant satisfaction. It takes a special individual to be a police officer and perform the duties that are required by law for them to do. This paper will look at the satisfactions and challenges of police work on a day to day basis.…
However this topic did change the way how I look at police officers today. Growing up I was taught that whenever there is an emergency that the police men were the ones who everyone can depend on. They help serve and protect the communities to make them a better place, almost like a super hero. Schools failed to not educate the younger generation on police brutality. Back when I was in high school I’d question what I was taught about police and my safety. Can I really trust police or not? The purpose for this essay was to choose a feature or theme present in Between the World and Me and write a literary analysis that discusses the text in terms of that feature or major theme and so I decided to choose police…
On a daily basis police officers risk their lives to protect citizens and defend liberty. It is a noble and selfless occupation that makes a difference in the quality of life.…
When a new recruit joins a police force he is bursting with excitement and anticipation to fulfill all of the principles and standards that come with being a police officer: dedication, loyalty, trust and integrity. He has a high set of standards and a set of goals he wants to achieve as an officer of the law such as stopping crime, improving the moral of the neighborhoods and becoming a positive mentor to the youth of the community. He has a new sense of belonging; he is now a member of a team, a brotherhood, an official member of an elite club; he is an officer of the law.…
As a police officer, we have an obligation to the community to approach our work within the guidelines and procedures of the NSWPF without bias. At the same time, our life experience may allow us to do this in a way that provides empathy, reduces stress or danger and gives a solution to a situation (Birch, Harington,…
1. I have chosen Police Officer as my desired profession. I chose this career path because being a part of the police force has been a part of my family for quite some time. The idea of being a police officer has always interested me and I think that actually becoming one would be a good idea.…
What does it mean to be a police officer? To most, it means to perform their duties with integrity, nobility honor, courage, and morality. While a very large percentage of law enforcement officers act in such a way, there are a few that do not and which shines a bad light toward the entire profession. Sadly in today’s culture, the respect for law enforcement is extremely low which makes it a difficult for those in the profession to do their jobs. While some may argue the concerns are warranted because of the lack of honesty and the bad actions of a small few, a mutual trust needs to be established…
Back in the early days of policing, basically anyone who would accept the policing job was hired for the position. It is not that way anymore, now one must work hard to become an officer and pass many tests. There are many requirements that must be fulfilled before becoming an officer in today’s society. Though the departments work hard on recruiting the right individuals, some will still not make it through all the necessary requirements. Being selected is just the beginning of a long process in which every part must be passed. For those who chose to become an officer, the effort put into it, is well worth it. Being an officer means, wanting to help others, one must have a strong mental capacity, because the job can become stressful at times.…
The academy for me was an exciting time; I was finally going to follow in my father’s footsteps. I have found that either you follow in your father’s footsteps to be a cop or you simply don’t want anything to do with it. I believe as our book stated that the police mentality is very different from the rest of society, a subcultural in itself (Ch. 7). I found myself surprised to have the traits the author was describing about a police officer. I am a loner and even now, not in the law enforcement field, I still look for law violators. I think once you’re a cop, always a cop. Police work was very rewarding for me, but with the danger of the job, I was injured, forcing me to find another career. I miss the street beat, helping people, and…
In the daily life of police officers, the day can begin with abject boredom and transform into harrowing danger. There is never a pattern to what may occur. Many come into a police career with the desire to help others and make a difference in their community or even the world. During the time when I began my career as an officer, there was a push for professionalism and a return to protecting and serving of the public. This came from the decades of racism, enforcement of white supremacy, and using officers as a way to take civil liberties. During the latter portion of the eighties and early nineties, professional police service was the work ethic being installed into new police officers. Throughout my career, I have witnessed a change from professional teachings, to more militarized elitist teachings. This has been particularly evident in the past ten years. In past studies, researchers have found attitudes toward police have been mainly cultivated through officer interaction with people, and through media effects (Mazerolle, et al., 2013, Avdija & Giever, 2010). However, it is my belief that things have significantly changed with regards…
Since I was a small child, seven or eight years of age, my desire to be in law enforcement has remained strong. I have expired the searching of other careers, and come up short. As I grew older, I consulted with those I respect, seeking their wisdom in my career path. This choice had not been fashioned lightly. I am convinced, at this point in my life, serving as a law enforcement officer is my calling. My ability to serve our community and nation, as a law enforcement officer, is a great passion of mine. I am compelled to serve those around me, by protecting the innocent and carrying out justice to the guilty.…
* Police officers work in partnership with the communities they serve to maintain law and order, protect members of the public and their property, prevent crime, reduce the fear of crime and improve the quality of life for all citizens. They use a wide range of technology to protect individuals, identify the perpetrators of crime and ensure successful prosecutions against those who break the law. Police officers work closely with members of the criminal justice system, social workers, schools, local businesses, health trusts, housing authorities, town planners and community groups to provide advice, education and assistance to those who wish to reduce crime or have been affected by crime. I chose to research this job because I like to help people and the best way I can imagine doing this is becoming a cop.…
