In society, more young people are drinking in excess that is severely dangerous. The effects of a young adult drinking underage are that it can lead to diseases that are severe and chronic to the body such as kidney failure, liver failure, alcohol poisoning and even death. These health problems could could have long term chronic illnesses and damage with expensive treatments such as surgery and medication. Raising the age limit prevents less young people to have health problems that are influenced by alcohol. According to the National Institute On Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIH), “In this and similar studies (21,22), memory problems were most common among adolescents in treatment who had experienced alcohol.”(NIH). In this quote, the studies have shown that young people who drink in excess have difficulties in their brain. Part of their brain is damaged that controls their memory. Their memory loss can be permanent or temporary. This health issue of memory loss and forgetfulness can be very serious. If the drinking age limit is twenty one, then more young people will have less severe consequences in health issues such as brain damage in memory…
In Italy, France, and Spain it's 16. In New Zealand it's 18. In the United States it's 21, and in places such as China and Portugal there isn't one at all. But what is this I'm talking about? It's the legal drinking ages of countries around the world.…
There is a huge problem with underage drinking in the U.S. Some states have already lowered the drinking age such as Maine, Massachusetts, and Michigan. One main point on why it shouldn’t be lowered is because of a higher chance of depression in teens. Second, it increases health and educational problems in teens also. Lastly, it would increase the amount of alcohol related accidents because of teens brains not being fully developed.…
For many years, there has been the question should the drinking age be lowered to 18? In today's society, most young adults drink behind their guardians back, but do not realize the consequences that come with their choices. With much speculation, this topic has became a very intriguing argument. What does drinking do to the growth of the brain? Can alcohol do just as much harm to someone 18 then someone 21? Will they be just as responsible? Can someone that young make the correct decisions?…
The US Federal Trade commission educated us about underage drinking by: Alcohol consumption can interfere with development of the young adult brain's frontal lobes, essential for functions such as emotional regulation, planning, and organization. When alcohol consumption interferes with this early adult brain development, the potential for chronic problems such as greater vulnerability to addiction, dangerous risk-taking behavior, reduced decision-making ability, memory loss, depression, violence, and suicide is greater (2010).…
For instance, other research shows that the younger children and adolescents are when they start to drink, the more likely they will be to engage in behaviors that harm themselves and others (NIH). This confirms that having a bad behavior at or under the age of 21 can lead to people getting harmed, harassed, or even killed. Also, driving under intoxication can lead to major car accidents and people can get hurt or even die. Another example is, frequent binge drinkers (nearly 1 million high school students nationwide) are more likely to engage in risky behaviors, including using other drugs, having sex, and earning grades that are mostly D's and F’s in school (NIH). This proves that people can get sexually assaulted while intoxicated and don't even know. You can also be failing your class or classes because alcohol can start deacon functioning your brain and be unintelligent, if you keep on continuing and not stopping at all. The minimum drinking should be raised to 25 because young adults are more expected to abuse and/or even murder themselves or others by consuming above-mentioned to…
Accidents can have a huge effect on adolescents and it can likewise be lethal. Minors drinking liquor can make them drink and drive which can bring about a car crash. Underage drinking can expand the rate of auto crashes quickly. Then again, auto collisions are by all account not the only mischances that can influence young people. Different mischances that can be brought on by underage drinking are falling or getting run over. The lopsidedness that liquor has among adolescents can bring about these mishaps to be life undermining. The outcomes from underage drinking can have numerous negative impacts among teenagers and our communities.…
More than twenty one thousand lives have been saved with the drinking age being twenty one. For about 10 years in the early 1900’s, our country ratified the 18th amendment which banned the production and consumption of alcohol. This amendment led to extreme crime, violence, and even speakeasies. Our country realized that it wasn’t the best idea for prohibition, and we then ratified the 21st amendment that repealed the 18th amendment. The 21st amendment has helped prevent car related tragedies in the 18-20 age group while they were under the influence. I believe the alcohol age should not change because of it reducing crashes, the fact that your brain is more developed and you understand your limits, and a change in New Zealand’s drinking to age 18 has spiked the percentage of alcohol related crashes.…
Alcohol is a drink that is a huge part of today’s American society, it’s used to make toasts at weddings and even included in certain religions. However, it has the ability to impair judgment and cause people to be reckless. Therefore, in the United States, there are laws regarding alcohol consumption. The most recent and ongoing controversy regarding drinking is whether the legal drinking age should be lowered from twenty-one to eighteen. Lowering the drinking age from twenty-one to eighteen would be an effective and beneficial step to help reduce alcohol-related accidents and deaths, encourage safe drinking activity, and allow those of legal adulthood the opportunity to fully and responsibly make adult decisions.…
People argue on lowering the drinking age to eighteen whether it is a good idea. Some teenagers start experiencing drinking in high school. Many teenagers think there is nothing wrong with a drink every now or again at a party. In fact, many teenagers see drinking alcohol as an important stage in becoming an adult. For this reason, teenagers are more temped to consume alcohol. The legal drinking age should be lowered from twenty-one to eighteen because eighteen is considered to be a legal adult, it will help with economy, and help teenagers have a safer environment.…
There is a giant debate on what the legal minimum drinking age should be in the United States. Many people think that it should remain at 21 years old and others believe that it should be lowered to 18. While both have their own various reasons, this has been an important topic in our country for a long time. President Ronald Reagan signed and passed the National Minimum Drinking Age Law in 1984 which obligated states to raise their legal drinking age to 21 or suffer reductions in Federal highway funds. The highway funds and drinking age was linked together by the young lives lost on our highways. Even though this was a satisfactory reason to raise the drinking age there are still more reasons to why it should be 18. Despite what most people…
Drinking at an early age has been an ongoing discussion among young Americans and their opponents, their parents and, elders. Much adolescence believe that setting the drinking age at 21 does not make any difference, and it should even be lowered to 18, as many other countries hold. Even though there is no proof that not legalizing drinking age at 21 genuinely makes a difference, US should not lower the drinking age, and should maintain it at 21 years old.…
The legal drinking age has been a controversial topic for the past few decades. Many may argue that the drinking age should be lowered to 18 since you are already treated and considered like an adult by that age. Others may argue to raise the drinking age to 25 to prevent more accidents that are harming innocent citizens. Thinking that the older you get the more mature you are. And others just say to keep the legal drinking age at 21 since this system has been working fine for the time being. What exactly is the perfect age? The perfect age may never be found but I have some valid points on why the drinking age should not be lowered with anything under the age of 21. We can all recognize that under age drinking has caused many problems in…
At the age of 18 you are legally considered an adult in the U.S. It entitles you to what you would think to be the freedoms of a responsible adult. You can vote, get married, join the army and fight for our country, and even sign contracts. But somehow you’re not considered mature enough to have a sip of alcohol? This law should be considered discrimination against young adults in the 18-20 age range. What many people don’t know, is the real reason why we have the world’s highest drinking age. In 1984 congress threatened to reduce highway funding for all states who did not raise their minimun purchase age and public possession of alcohol laws. Of course all U.S. states complied with this act, nationally raising the legal age. They say it’s…
According to the Archives of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine, in 2010 underage drinkers from ages 15-20 were responsible for 48.8% of alcohol purchases. The minimum legal drinking age(MLDA) in the United States was 18 years old until 1984, when all fifty states raised their legal drinking age to 21 or older. The drinking age should be lowered from 21 years old to 18 years old because at that age one legally becomes an adult, it would reduce the amount of unsafe drinking activity, and there are fewer drunk driving car accidents in many other countries with a drinking age of 18.…
