Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)
what are the signs of ADHD? What is ADHD? What causes it and how is it diagnosed? More importantly, how is it treated? I have also, researched to find out what could happen if, and when, ADHD goes untreated.
Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder is a “developmental disorder characterized by distractibility, hyperactivity, impulsive behaviors, and the inability to remain focused on tasks or activities.”# After the diagnosis of ADHD, I craved information and statistics. More than two million children have ADHD. That’s an average of two children in each classroom throughout the United States. About 2-3% go undiagnosed and are characterized as “bad apples.”
So that more children don’t go undiagnosed, we need to be aware of the signs. One of the signs to watch for, is: often squirming in a seat and fidgeting with the hands or feet. Other signs to watch for are: not remaining seated when expected to, talking excessively, blurting things out, and interrupting or intruding on others often. The final two that are very common are running or climbing excessively and being constantly on the move as if driven by a car motor.
Scientists do not know exactly what causes ADHD. Scientists have discovered that it is a biological disorder, meaning in the genes. ADHD is mainly passed from a father to a son. Very rarely is it passed from a mother, or to a daughter. “Scientists have suggested that certain neurotransmitters(chemicals in the brain that permit nerve cells to transmit information to other nerve cells) are deficient in those with ADHD.”#
Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder cannot be diagnosed until a child is in school.
