A Turning Point
A Turning Point

It was the first day of high school. I was not excited at all. My dad sent me to an International Private High School where bunch of rich people speak good English. The tuition fees to study there are pricy, too. My family isn’t really a wealthy one. My parents sent me there so that I could receive the “best” education in Malaysia. Tsk! Tsk! Sad to say this but I was totally not interested being there and the fact that I couldn’t speak English, at all, was really killing me. How was I supposed to communicate with the people there? (Note: Being able to speak fluent English represents higher status or level of that person in Malaysia.) Well, the reason why I can’t speak English at all is because I went to a Chinese elementary school and I was raised in a Chinese speaking family. The classroom contained only 28 students. The size of the class is really small, well, one of the reasons why the school fees are so scarily expensive. I walked into the classroom and randomly chose a seat and sat beside “her”. She had a long, black hair tied in ponytail, slim and fair. She is pretty and elegant. I looked way more boyish sitting beside her. I said “Hi” and that’s how our story began. Her name is Leanne. She is a very gentle girl. Her horoscope is Virgo. Now you can imagine how girlish and perfectionist she is. Her work is always neat and tidy. Academically, her results were always 90% and above. She was a runner representing our school. She was talented, too, as she could play piano and dance ballet. Her family is wealthy because her dad worked as a politician holding really high post. Compared to Leanne’s grades, my results weren’t bad additionally I am round and short so I don’t do well in sports. I am not talented like her but I am very proud to say that I can sing, better than her. All in all, there is only one word that I can use to describe her, “perfect”. Even though I couldn’t speak fluent English, she didn’t look down on me like the

However, the main problem was that my parents didn’t know one word in the English language yet, they managed to find shelter for my brother and I while balancing multiple jobs. I was around the age of two and I caused my parents the most strain on their lives. As I grew older I faintly remember being handed off to least 3 different babysitters, starting from 5am in the morning till 6pm in the evening. At the shy age of five I would now comprehend my parents struggle with various issues such as taking care of me, their youngest child, or massive language barrier. In addition, to my parents having a difficulty learning English, so did I. I wasn’t surrounded by the English language, I didn’t acquire American friends or listen to my family speak English around the house; instead I learned every morning by watching Dora the Explorer on…

In august 2009, I had my first international trip from South Korea to America; Tucson, Arizona. It was actually immigration. At that time, I only knew basic English and used it for survival; I knew only the minimum. I entered a private school, called Desert Christian High School, in my sophomore year. The school’s counselor put me in regular classes and as expected, I fell behind. Math class was fine because it didn’t require reading skills much. However, the rest of the five subjects out of six were problems.…

To be candid I can relate to this article and I can feel the pain you and your mom went through. Growing up as a born African who migrated from Africa to the U.S for a better live, adjusting to the language they speak here and the one we speak back home was very difficult. I spoke something almost similar to what you called “Broken English.” I find it too hard to pronounce the words even now I have trouble getting some words out. In my high school years as a freshman, my accent was still heavy and I did not feel comfortable talking to anyone except for the teachers who motivated me. When I talk to students, they say the wrong responds to what I am saying because they do not understand me or even laugh at me and tell me to be quite. Going to see my high school English teacher three times a week after school for some help on my pronunciation made my English so much better. I felt unwanted by most students but one of my teachers a Filipino woman called “Mrs. Ramos” cared about me. She always calls me to advise me about my peers. She would say, “Brandon, do not let what these kids say about you hurt you, you know better and you are a smart student, you have respect for elders, you have good home training, you know you culture, your history and where you are from. But most of these kids do not care about all that stuff because their parents did not care.” I guess I am lucky; her words always motivated me to keep doing what I was there for, get educated and not make friends who will try to put me down.…

I approached my teacher and asked for help to improve my language skills. My teacher offered to let me switch into the first grade Korean class instead of my current class, which I couldn’t even understand. While at first I was repulsed by the idea, I knew that despite how humiliating the lower class seemed, it was something necessary. As a result, I began learning the basics of Korean in a course with my brother who is four years younger than me. I slowly but surely began to not only improve my fluency but also become more comfortable conversing with my…

Since Spanish was the only language I knew since it was the only language spoken in my household. I entered Elementary School insufficient in the English language and due to my hesitance to speak in class ; I was put into the Speech program. A program designed to teach children to pronounce, articulate, and enunciate words in the English language. I hated the unwanted attention my language barrier brought towards me. One day as I was called on to read a page from a short story named "Frog and Toad Are Friends" as I read ; I recall blushing in embarrassment due to my peer's ongoing laughter on how funny I pronounced the words. My body became tense my face burned more as time passed. When I felt like I couldn't take the humiliation any longer I stood up and walked out the class. My teacher soon followed after me and offered her time to listen to me vociferate my anger. After listening to my rant she smiled, patted my head and said. "I know it's hard but if you work hard you will graduate from the program and perhaps be better than your peers." This statement motivated me to be the best student possible. I practiced daily my handwritten phonics flashcards, read various books to augment my vocabulary, and practiced on my own my presentation/ social skills. By the end of the year, I flourished demolishing my timidness. I began participating regularly in class, had one of if not…
