Instructions for Saving a Microsoft® Word document on a computer running a Windows-based operating system to a computer disc

1. Opening Microsoft® Word
Choose one of the following options to open Microsoft® Word
a. If you have a Microsoft® Word icon on your desktop, double-click it to open.
b. Choose Start from the taskbar (Figure 1)
i. Go to Programs
ii. Choose Microsoft® Word

2. Saving a document
First option:
To save your document, follow these steps:
a. Click the Microsoft button or File (in office 2003 or older versions). A menu will appear.
b. Choose Save As from the menu. Then choose word document or any of the other available options.(Figure 2)

c. A window will appear. (Figure 3)
d. Choose the location to save the file
e. Name your file by typing the name in File Name field
f. Click Save to save your document.

Second option:
a. Click the Microsoft button or File (in office 2003 or older versions). A menu will appear.
b. Choose Exit Word or Close from the menu.
c. A window will appear asking if you want to save the changes to the document. (Figure 4)

d. Click Yes to save the file.
e. A window will appear. (Figure 3)
f. Choose the location to save the file
g. Name your file by typing the name in File Name field
h. Click Save to save your document.

Name of the file
When choosing a name for your file, consider the following:
• You can choose a combination of any alphabetic letter and digits
• The name can contain non-alphanumeric characters except the following characters < > : " / \ |
• Do not start or end the file name with an empty space
• Do not start the name by $...
