Why Should Student Athletes Be Paid?
“According to Mark Kantrowitz and FinAid.org, approximately 1% to 2% of undergraduate students in Bachelor’s degree programs receive athletic scholarships, equaling a total of about $1 billion a year. While that monetary amount is growing at a rate of 4.5% year over year…” Yes giving talented athletes scholarships is great. The state is giving the athlete an opportunity to get a free education just due solely on the fact that they play their sport very well. But why should athletes on scholarships be paid any typeof salary if everything school related is basically taken care of. On the other hand why do only student athlete get this chance to be paid. How abut people who have academic scholarships, they’re not any less important to the school because they don’t play any sports. Lastly giving kids extra dependable money can lead to athletes becoming more prone to messing up their scholarship. When a young adult expendable money usually it is spent on things that is not always need or always smart for them to invest in int he first time. On top of that this could lead to athletes being able to live a more party life at the expense of the university of choice. With athletes …show more content…
The question is, would people with academic scholarships be able to be payed a salary equivalent to the an athletes scholarships salary. Some may feel that academic scholarship holders don’t have a reason to be get salary since they don’t do much physical work all the time. Most of the time their rewarded for their philosophical or creative ways of thinking. I feel though that this unfair because they still work very hard. Just because they don’t run, swim, row or etc doesn’t make them any less important or any less in need of descendable funding. If people on athletic scholarships get a salary than it is only fair that the people on academic scholarships get the same amount

There have been major discussions recently if college athletes should or shouldn’t be paid while they are in school. Once you get a sport involved, there are politics, injuries, and a call to the office to tell the player, “thanks, but we don’t need you on this team anymore.” Many players will get a scholarship for a year or two, and then transfer to a different school which returns out to be a better situation. A $25,000 scholarship may seem like a lot of money, but it really only covers the basics, such as books, tuition, university fees, housing and a meal. The point of this is that a scholarship doesn’t equal cash in a player’s pocket.…

Why should college athletes be paid to participate in their sports? College athletes are awarded tuition free college due to their hard work and athletic abilities, why should they get paid extra money outside of their tuition being paid? Student athletes in college only have two jobs while they are attending, to learn and become a better and smarter athlete. These student athletes don’t need extra money outside of having their tuition, room and board, and food paid for. They are also given clothing which takes away another money based need. These student athletes are given much more than other students and yet they still believe that they should be paid for their extra work outside of their performances. The main reason is because they are already paid through their scholarships to go to school and play sports. Other reasons to this opinion is to maintain their amatuer status, difficult…

The NCAA manages everything in college sports, and is considered a non-profit organization, all of the money they make is redistributed to the colleges that are part of the NCAA. Just football, and basketball generates 6 billion dollars a year, and not one penny of that money would've been made if it were not for the student athletes. In "Pay To Play: Should College Athletes Be Paid?," Adele Birkenes and Akash Bagaria who have written six articles about student life states "It is only reasonable that student athletes have a share in the millions of dollars that their sports businesses bring in." The statements by the authors bring to light this one simple question, why can the athletes be rewarded for making the NCAA and colleges successful? Although paying college athletes is not an easy decision for the people in charge, many support paying student athletes. There has been many proposals dating back to the 1950's, but there are five proposals that have a very good chance of getting passed, and used. In the article "Point/Counterpoint: Paying College Athletes," Dennis Johnson states "...former NCAA President Miles Brand's suggestion and allocate athletes include a $2,000-$3,000 cost of living increase to full scholarships...This would provide the athletes with the needed income for clothes, laundry, sundries, travel,…

Corruption, scandals, suspensions, firings and a systems that is systematically flawed all the while the fact of the matter is that the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) is a organization that is bringing in billions of dollars each year yet the labor force generating the money gets a scholarship that many athletes believe doesn’t pay enough for everything that is needed on campus so this leads the author to have to take a look at if athletes need to be paid. I will outline numerous problems that are going on in college athletics and possible solutions to problems. I will take a look at the scholarship itself to determine if that is sufficient enough for campus life. The bottom line is from the outside looking in is that there is a lot money going into the hands of administrators and coach’s with none going into the people shedding the blood sweat and tears. It would seem that the system in place at times, wants to make the student athlete stand around with their hands out accepting all and any money that they can find from an outside source, which is in violation of NCAA bylaws concerning amateur sports.…

On the contrary, some people think college athletes should not be payed due to the extensive amounts of financial help already given. This point makes sense because a college athlete receives many things connected to their scholarship such as: tuition, books, meals, housing, uniforms (depending on certain sport), etc. However, all scholarships are not full you can receive a partial scholarship, therefore leaving the rest of the pay to you. Therefore, some people believe college athletes should not be payed due to the extensive amounts of financial support given by the…

To begin with, college athletes can use the money for textbooks in school. Statistics show that seventy-four percent of college students struggle to purchase their textbooks, as the price rises frequently. To continue, athletes can also use the money towards their college fees reducing their stress about it. Evidence indicates that a large number of students struggle to pay their school fees. Paying these athletes will not only help them pay their fees, but as I mentioned earlier reduces the stress on them. Can you think of a student who pays his/her college fees on their own? If college athletes are paid, they could be the first to pay their own fees. As a final point, they could use the money for school supplies such as pencils, books, binders, etc. Therefore, the money they make from playing their sport can go towards their studies for several different valuable…

NCAA sports are one of the most popular foundations in America. The NCAA makes a round 5.8 billion dollars per year. That’s a lot of money right? So the question is if they make all that money should college athletes get paid? This has been an argument topic for a while now and some say college athletes should and some say college athletes shouldn’t get paid. There are many reasons for both of why they should or shouldn’t. Some people argue that college sports are more entertaining because they are playing solely for the love of the game, and that when they reach professional level and start getting paid that they don't play as hard. But if we were to pay them during college it would create financial awareness and I think that James Douglas' idea is what we should do. he said "Even if the NCAA or the universities paid the students a stipend and put it in a trust fund to be accessed upon graduation it might make a small difference in teaching young people how to handle money." (Listland). Even if they aren't getting paid thousands of dollars it would still…

I’m not saying that student athletes should be paid a wage or salary like professional athletes, because student athletes do get their school paid for. I do however feel that if the students’ needs are compensated for that they will be able to perform better on the field and also in the class room. Students would also be more at ease if there was an insurance policy that would include compensating for medical costs and also continuation of their scholarship if they were ever to become injured and unable to continue athletically due to an injury caused by the…
