Why A Graduate Degree
The decision to return to college and study for a master’s degree in Human Resources was a very tough decision to make. I have been in the workplace for over 20 years, I have a bachelor’s degree, and my life is full with my wife, family, friends, and all the little things that make these matters difficult to achieve. I knew that studying for a master’s degree would take a hard work and many sacrifices. One of the large factors, of course, is finances. I had to consider all of those things in my life that are important before embarking on this journey of education achievement and the real reason why I chose to return to college.
The strongest reason why I am pursuing a master’s degree is to complete my goal of achieving a graduate degree and become only the second in my family to go further than an undergraduate education. I have seven siblings, only three have attended college and I am one of two with a college degree. I have a B.S. in Business Administration that took me along time to achieve and I really wanted to excel higher in my education. I am the type of person that, once I set my sights on something I pursue it until completion. Receiving a graduate degree would complete my goals for higher education.
The next reason is because in my current position as general manager and executive director of a non-profit organization. My organization is a medium sized, community business that operates a thrift shop and offers emergency services for mostly low income individuals. Under my leadership I have eleven regular employees, work with thirty or more volunteers, direct the activities of several members and fifteen members of the board of directors. The business side has a myriad of compliance and legal issues that I most address daily. I am able to navigate many of those issues with my twenty years of experience and knowledge I have learned by working with executive managers and personnel.
