When the Power Goes Out: Will Technology Make Our Children Helpless?
Computers are useful tools in aiding children’s education, but it is prudent to continue to teach them to write by hand, be able to read text without abbreviations, perform mathematical problems without a calculator, and perform the most menial tasks, like cooking and cleaning by hand the hard way in preparedness for what could suddenly become a pre-technology life.
Consider this: the power goes out as a result of the war. No lights, no television, no phone, and worst of all no computers. Nothing works at the homes of the young families in the north side of town. What do they do? The people sit in the dark, hungry, bored, lonely and frightened. They do not know how to build a fire for heat, light, and cooking. Thinking they can get sustenance in town they drive to the closest restaurant, only to be turned away because the computers are no longer working,and nobody knows how to write the orders, much less add it up for payment. At the stores the story is the same. The people drive all around town looking for food finding out that, although it is plentiful, nobody knows how to prepare it. Then another problem erupts. Their cars run out of fuel due to all the driving around and they cannot refuel because the gas station pumps, all computerized, no longer function. Then someone hits upon the idea of looking up how it was done in the time before technology at the library. Because they can no longer drive they must walk and it proves a hard and difficult trek for a society who has become obese due to the lessened need for physical exercise. The walk proves to be in vain as when they arrive they discover that all the books have been computerized and no one knowwhat happened to the hard copies. Panic ensues and all hell breaks loose.
