The colonists in Jamestown were lazy. They wanted to search for gold rather than grow food. The English began to starve which led them to steal from the Powhatan tribe. This is a continuing trend through US history. By 1830 the Indians were removed from their ancestral lands and given very poor land. In 1607 Britain established Jamestown, the 1st permanent British Colony in America. Jamestown was led by Captain John Smith. The colonists had better technology which they used against the Indians. Britain wanted colonies to supply the mother country with resources and raw materials. It was not easy to start a colony. The first factor that made life difficult in the colonies was low technology in health care. People died in situations that seemed very basic. Another factor was poor relations with the Indians. The English were backstabbers. Another factor that made life difficult was the journey to America itself. There was food shortage and sickness ran high.
When the English first came to America they were greeted by the Indians with friendship and trust. But the English thought differently. In their eyes the Indians were savages and could not be trusted. Thinking this way led t poor relations with the Indians. The Indians were willing to help but the colonists used force to take what thy wanted. “Why take by force which you can have from us by love.” (Powhatan, 1609, par.2). This shows that the Indians were friendlier and more open minded. The colonists were actually the savages. The English were lazy and didn’t know how to survive. At Jamestown they searched for gold rather than look for food. The fact that they built Jamestown near a swamp made it even harder to live there. When there’s a swamp there’s bound to be mosquitoes. Many were bitten by mosquitoes and soon after died of Malaria. This shows the...
