What Are The Similarities Between The NCTE/IRA Standards

Standards are, according to Beyondstandards.ieee.org (2011), “published documents that establish specifications and procedures designed to ensure the reliability of the materials, products, methods, and/or services people use every day”. It is important to have set standards because they establish a set of fundamental blocks which are then universally used by everyone (“What Are Standards,” 2011). The National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) have established a set of standards for Language Arts that are “designed to complement other national, state, and local standards and contributes to ongoing discussion about English language arts classroom activities and curricula” (“NCTE/IRA Standards,” 2017). First, both sets of standards indicate that students will learn from texts, such as nonfiction and fictional books. Another thing that is similar between the two is the fact that both standards state that the students will learn Language Arts by using a variety of strategies, including phonetic principles, prior experiences, and textual features. The use of these different strategies is not only used during their reading, but through their writing as well. Both sets of standards include the fact that students will be able to use the appropriate oral language according to their audience as well as for their purpose of speaking. The NCTE states that the students will use a variety of genres to learn from whereas the Virginia state standards only indicates that first-grade students will use fiction and nonfiction books only (“NCTE/IRA Standards,” 2017; “English Standards of Learning,” 2010). The NCTE standards specifies that the students will learn and understand “diversity in language use, patterns, and dialects across cultures, ethnic groups, geography regions, and social roles” and this is not mentioned in Virginia’s state standards (“NCTE/IRA Standards,” 2017). Also, the NCTE designates that those who do not speak English will develop the ability to use their understanding in other areas (“NCTE/IRA Standards,” 2017).
