As I walk around the university grounds week in and week out, several questions continue to raise themselves in my mind. What are we all doing here? Is there such a thing as higher learning? What do we gain by researching the thoughts and ideas of others and constructing them in a new format? But above all that, the single greatest question in my mind is – Are we a generation of hypocrites? This is a question I have to ask myself daily because, in my reality, there is nothing worse than living one thing and representing another. There is nothing as distasteful as a person who jumps up and down about injustice and then leads a life of injustice themselves. So are we? Are we a generation of hypocrites? I don’t presume for even a second to try and answer, definitively, “yes” or “no” but, that said, I will do my best to stir up some conversation for the next time you buy your cup of Picasso Coffee.
My rights. Your rights. Our rights. Everyone is concerned about rights. When it comes down to it, everything since the dawn of time has been about people’s obsession with rights. It seems, to me at least, to be a case of “If I can push enough for this right, and I get it, then I am obviously justified in it”. But is it that simple? “Success is the sole earthly judge of right and wrong” someone famous once said. Although, you should know that it was Adolf Hitler that said it. Sociologists in the 1980s called this generation the IDI’s. IDI – I deserve it. Does that describe you? Do you throw a tantrum when your fast food isn’t so fast? Do you believe that everything should be cheaper because you are on Austudy? Well, maybe there are a few thoughts in here that will spark some thinking for you.
