Since the city is dependent on summer tourism, I believe spraying the pesticide would be in the best interest for all. You already have death due to the WNV (West Nile Virus) and I’m sure the city doesn’t want anymore. It’s great that the wealthy resident of the deceased family member wants to implement an extensive program of aerial spraying. With as many cases and fatalities from the West Nile Virus, spraying the pesticide is needed. There are concerns from the city council members as well as probably some of the residents and that’s understandable.
This program is going to educate people about the Malathion pesticide, the dangers and any other concerns that the council members as well as citizens have. People need to be aware of the dangers of the West Nile Virus carried by mosquitoes and should realize that spraying the mosquitoes would be the only possible way to get rid of them. You should not be outside during the spraying process and should avoid inhaling or handling anything that may have the pesticide residue on it. The city as mentioned earlier has some tourist’s attractions and the wetlands being one of them but they are breeding grounds for the mosquitoes that carry the WNV disease.
These wetlands I understand are very popular to summer vacationers and since the city of Genericville has such a high rate of incidence of West Nile Virus, tourists probably would not want to visit and that would create a problem with the city’s economy. Reduce tourism will create further poverty and could in turn increase health risks to city residents. So I think implementing this program is a good idea for everyone but you will have to follow the program and do as told....
