It can be debated, whether or not voting should be compulsory in local and national elections in the United States. Political votes are very important in America. They determine who will run that states, or even the entire nation as a whole. Depending on this, the country could either fail or succeed, in many different ways. All citizens should definitely be well educated in politics. However, voting should not be compulsory. There are too many risks that come with compulsory voting. Therefore, voting should not be compulsory in local and national elections in the United States. America relies on the votes of citizens. Citizens should have the right to only vote when they’re very passionate about that candidate. The article states, “In many dictatorships, citizens are often forced to vote for the same person every election because the government does not allow other candidates to run for the same position.” This implies that forced voting can be misused very easily and leads to a result that does not accurately represent the country. If this law wasn’t in effect, there would be a decline of votes. However, these votes would belong to those that are apathetic towards voting. This would allow the votes to have a better and truer representation of the country. Of course, there are those that believe that voting should be compulsory. The article states, “But how can democracies have representative governments unless all or most of their citizens vote?” This illustrates how important voting is for America and most other countries.
