VISIT TO THE GYM

This was a visit made to the gym at the Hemel Hempstead Sportspace. The purpose of this visit was to be able to relate the physics learnt in the classroom with its real life applications. In this case physics behind the gym equipment will be discussed throughout.

Applications of Physics:
• The most common application of physics visible instantaneously in most gym equipment is the network of pulleys. The simple pulleys make the lifting of weights a lot easier. It makes the lifting movement very smooth since it reduces friction considerably. The pulleys can also be manipulated in order to make the work even easier-so you could be lifting 100kg by applying very minimal force. The humble pulley is used everywhere today to make life much easier, especially in the construction industry. It is used in the cranes that carry very heavy loads to various heights.
• Another aspect of physics used is the careful positioning of the steel or iron members to make the whole structure very sturdy and long lasting. Bracing the frame can make it very stable which is crucial for weight lifting since any movement while lifting weights can be very dangerous. All this can be done using physics since forces in different directions can be calculated and the required strengthening can be done.
• The third application is usually not noticed by an average person. It is an application very useful in every manner – price, quality, quantity, durability, strength and many other aspects. This is the application of physics to determine the material to be used to build the structure. This is a very demanding process since the material has to confirm to a number of constraints such as price, durability, appearance, weight and many more. This usually leads to one material which confirms to almost all these conditions, and that is Steel, but other materials such as aluminium is also used in places depending on the conditions, usually where reducing the weight is very...
