There are all different types of video games out there and many people don't know what the differences are.   Everyone has a different preference when it comes to games and I am going to go over a few of the common ones.  
My favorite types of games are first person shooters.   FPS's or first person shooters are games in which you take the point of view of the character.   Generally these are different types of war or futuristic games.   They have these games for most gaming platforms.   First person shooters can be the most fun while playing them online against real people.   These are pretty much the only games I play.   I don't like sci-fi or futuristic games.   I tend to only play first person shooters that are war games that deal with current or past battles.
MMORPG's or massively multiplayer online role playing games are games in which you take the role of a fictional character which generally is in some kind of fantasy world.   These games are different than most because you play online with thousands of other players.   Generally these games take quite a bit of getting used to if not familiar with them.   They usually have some kind of level system in which you go on missions or quests to get higher levels.   In some games it can take a lot of time to gain high levels.   I personally don't like these kinds of games.
RTS's or real time strategy games are computer games that tend to be classified as war games that take place during real time.   In these games you control entire battles.   You play online against other people controlling their forces.   It is your job to build up your forces and defenses and take out the enemy.   In these games you don't actually fight, you control where your forces attack and you are in charge of all the resources such as food, personnel, and defenses.   Basically it is your job to raise an army, and then destroy your opponents.   These games can be one on one or in teams.
