Values and Diversity
As I look back at my life and all the many people and events that I have
encountered, I must say that there is much to be said when it comes to the issue of
personal values. Values cannot be defined by a single definition. Everyone comes from a different background, with different experiences that lead to different results. Because of this, each one of us has something unique to bring to the table. I define values as the traits and characteristics learned and implanted through living. My family has been a huge factor in my life. I believe they played a large role in helping formulate a foundation for my values by providing building blocks for what became my understanding and appreciation of honesty, reliability, and trust.
One great challenge in the nursing field is how to appropriately incorporate our own values and beliefs into the professional practice. The strong connection between the patient and nurse is a wonderful opportunity to comprehend mutual feelings, recognize strengths, fears, choices, faith, and goals. Nurses should be aware and sensitive to the patient’s conflicts, personal drama, and experience. A nurse’s spiritual and moral support is a useful tool to promote well-being and contribute to assist the patient to cope with the difficult life situations. The understanding of patient needs will provide an essential connection to begin care giving. The complete acknowledgment of their illness will make it possible for us to promote meaning, hope, love and many other qualities to the patient.
Nurses are in privileged position to influence the patient’s behavior. The daily care and the relationship created on the mutual trust, make it possible for the patient and the nurse to develop a special connection that will allow both exchange their insights and thoughts.
