Project Managements Value to REINA Alaska, llc
At REINA Alaska, project management is at the core of what they do. Project management principals, techniques and methodologies are utilized throughout the company to align the stream of projects to the company’s strategic objectives and goals. PMBOK states that “Project management is accomplished through the application and integration of the project management processes of initiating, planning, executing, monitoring and controlling, and closing” (Project Management Institute [PMI], 2004, p. 8).
The use of technology is an important factor in the project management process at REINA. MS Project is used throughout the project life cycle to effectively plan, execute, monitor and control, and close out projects. In addition, mobile computing technologies allow instant communication between the jobsite and the office with both visual and text communications. Proposed design changes can be accomplished on site, and transmitted to the office for approval, thus saving time. A digital photographic “diary” is maintained throughout the construction process to document construction techniques and detail, a copy of which is provided to the client upon completion of the project. Integrating these technological techniques into the process management plan has allowed for greater control of costs and time associated with the construction of homes in several locations at one time without the need for additional staff.
