The main character in the story, Phoenix Jackson, is an old black woman who makes a long journey into town to get medicine for her ill grandson. Despite the many obstacles Phoenix encounte“Ripe Figs,” was a very good story. The story was based on two individuals, Maman-Nainaine, and Barbette. Maman-Nainaine was very good at protecting Barbette by not letting her get away from her in certain seasons. The people in the story did not have any electricity so the only how they knew time was by the season. Maman-Nainaine didn’t want any of the farmers to take advantage of Barbette so during the winter she didn’t allow the little girl to leave home. When the fig in the farm was right, Maman-Nainaine knew it was summer/ spring and it was fine for the little girl to visit her cousinrs along her journey, determination helps her to continue1.
