Understanding Myths
Knowing the meaning of the word myth and how it functions in society will help one understand mythology. Scott and McClure (2004) Myths are ancient narratives that attempt to answer enduring and fundamental questions. Myths played multiple roles in society in the past and also play the same roles in society today. Myths explain the world in different ways, myths bring people together, and a majority of myths are related to certain rituals.   At times specific acts that one may take are derived from myths. In certain cultures myths are a component of cultural values.
Myths are unique in their own way, and customs in cultures are validated by myth. All cultures believe in myths, they may be myths that will bring them wealth, health, prosperity and success. Other myths that cultures believe in are myths that life and death is destined by a myth of one’s culture. Myths are also known to make one immortal and have everlasting life.   Regardless of what the myth may be, it is derived by one creating a myth and telling it to someone. The myth is then passed on by many generations. Several theories of myths existed in the past and will continue to exist. Comparative and structural theories tell stories about heroes. Scott and McClure (2004) Freudian psychological theories are linked to individuals and are inherited from past ancestors. Psychological theories are based on history. Ritual theories are religious, established and patterned, and are shared by a group. There are two types of ritual theories, and they are differentiated by ancient rituals and doctrine rituals.   Ancient religions are emphasized by dance, for example, Mayan ceremonial dance, which is a custom dance established by the Mayans for celebrations.   Modern religions focus on doctrines, for example some Americans, believe that baptism, a religious ceremony purifies the body and allows one to be accepted as a Christian.
