I believe that each child is unique individual who needs a secure, caring, and stimulating atmosphere in which to grow and mature emotionally, intellectually, physically, and socially. It is my desire as an educator to help students meet their fullest potential in these areas by providing an environment that is safe, supports risk-taking, and invite a sharing of ideas. There are three elements that I believe are conducive to establishing such an environment namely, the teacher acting guide, allowing the child’s natural curiosity to direct his/her learning, promoting respect for all the things and all the people.…

Learning style? Why would one need to know a learning style? There is a way for you to find out what type of learning style you have. The VARK learning style assessment tool, developed by Neil Fleming, is an assessment that can be taken to discover ones learning style. There are several learning styles; kinesthetic style; those who learn from hands on experience, auditory learners; a learning style of memorization by retaining what is heard (Blasen, n.d., para.1), visual learners; individuals who retain best through written language such as reading and writing ("VARK Questionnaire," 2011, para. 1), and last multimodal study strategy; a learning strategy of…

I think I do better acting out how things work while I am studying or doing homework. The assessment did surprise me a little bit because I was not expecting to score high with visual, aural, and read/write. I’m also surprised that I scored Kinesthetic by a point above of visual, aural, and read/write. There are some points where I could have been a visual, aural, and read/write learner. I would like to use visual because at times when I use a graph to look at different percentages that are about many different things, it helps to look at what item is better by the percentage. Aural would help be by listening to what others say about a topic and how they feel about it. It gives me the idea on what others think and how I can follow the topic and not mess up and make a fool of myself. Read/write would help me by reading through directions and following them, or rewriting notes from a power point. I would say kinesthetic is my number one learning ability to have because of being hands-on materials and do actions while I am studying and doing…

As an uncommented student I have faced a lot of academic struggle and self doubt, because of my immigration status, the limited access to resources, and the negative stigma undocumented individuals face. The self doubt came from a lack of awareness, and that led to my decision of not even attempting to attend college. That self doubt led to the doubt of others, it led to almost failing every single class, it led to depression, it almost led to suicide. Seeing all the resources my friends had access to and noticing how much those resources motivated and pushed them to strive for a college degree, it isolated me, which made me feel unwelcome. At the time the California Dream Act was enacted into law on October 8, 2011, which was probably the best day of my life. It shifted my whole view on post secondary…

“In the American capitalist system, students learn to compete; the goal is to win, ‘to beat the others,’(Eve), even if this means acting in ways that are personally frustrating and dissatisfying” (Pope, 169). Denise Clark Pope, in chapter 7 of her book Doing School: How We Are Creating a Generation of Stressed-Out, Materialistic, and Miseducated Students, explains that students that are deemed successful often use tactical strategies such as cheating, kissing up and forming treaties in order to excel. She claims that in being successful students they must, “act in ways that run counter to explicit or implicit school rules and guidelines. Often their behavior contradicts the very traits and values many parents,…

The educational journey from pre-school through high school can be quite challenging. Students not only have to know how to listen, take notes, and outline information, but they must also have the skills to solve problems, work in groups, and think critically. Offering a course in study skills would provide all students with the opportunity to better understand their learning style, improve organizational skills, and assist in developing ways to retain existing knowledge for successful test taking.…

In order to carry out this investigation, I will first provide students with a survey to test which learning style is theirs (attached is my cheat sheet to score the tests). I am using this survey from The Maximizing Study Abroad Series. Which was written by Andrew D. Cohen, Rebecca L. Oxford, and Julie C. Chi. The student's will be given the questions on the cheat sheet, but the questions will be out of order so they do not know what category the question belongs in. Each student I test will be in the same grade, a senior. I will test 80 students, (40 boys, 40 girls) as to assure more accurate results. Because I will be giving the students a written test with mixed up…
