NOTES # 1 THE AMERICAN WEST and the PLAINS INDIANS
CONQUEST OF THE AMERICAN WEST:
-Plains Indians most warlike and nomadic
-Buffalo-their source of existence/survival
-the ‘rifle’ changed their life style
-many tribes, languages and dialects
-all communicated through “Sign Language”
INDIANS LIVE PEACEFUL WITH WHITES UNTIL…..
-gold was discovered in 1858 in Montana
-Apache, Cheyenne, were relocated in Colorado
-Col. J.M. Chivington massacres hundreds of Cheyenne
-1860, the Sioux uprising resulted in death of their leader
Red Cloud,
-the peace between Indians and whites shattered forever
U.S. GOVERNMENT POLICY OF PLAINS INDIANS
-Divide and conquer
-Set up boundaries for the Indians to live
-to fish, hunt, U.S. Government keep check on them
-the corrupt “Bureau of Indian Affairs” made their life miserable
PLAIN’S INDIANS LAST STAND
-Indians were denied 13th Amendment-end slavery
-Indians were denied 14th Amendment-full citizenship if born in
the U.S., but still denied citizenship
-Last great battle for the Plains Indians:
“Battle of Little Big Horn” July, 1876 in Montana between the Sioux,
Cheyenne, and Colonel George Armstrong Custer
-Custer had 2,500 well-armed soldiers
-“A Good Day to Die”-the Plains Indians believed this
-no force or power could defeat them on that day
END OF PLAINS INDIANS WAY OF LIFE
-1884, forbidden to practice their religion
-1887, “Dawes Act” diminish tribal lands
-1890, “Battle of Wounded Knee”-Sioux performed their “Ghost Dance”
believed bullets would bounce off them-they didn’t
-U.S. Cavalry won the battle, 100’s of Sioux killed
-“Ghost Dance” outlawed
-Apache were last tribe to surrender and moved on a reservation
