Twenty Years Later
Twenty Years Later I, Beth Thomas, a 37-year-old married woman, have always been afraid to ride an airplane. People always say the only way to get over your fears is to face them, so today will be the day I will face my greatest fear. Why today you ask? Because today is the day of my twenty year High School Reunion. Today will be the day I will see my fellow classmates of the class of Dorman High 2009. Yikes! I Cant believe it! Twenty years have passed since I’ve graduated from high school. Time has flown by so fast! Where did it go? What happened to all the drama, the heartaches, the tears, the laughter, the trends, the parties, and all of the fun times that came along with being in high school? I had the time of my life back then. People are right when they say the best years of your life are when you are young. Man, how I wish life was that simple today! Where I wouldn’t have to worry about a stressful job, or a discontented husband, or spoiled impertinent teenage kids. Don’t get me wrong, I love working as an interior designer and I certainly love my husband and children, but sometimes I wish I could just escape from my life. I want to take a break from life, and experience the same fun and excitement I did when I was in high school, so I plan to attend my 20-year high school reunion and with any luck this experience will bring back the found old memories of high school. I rolled over in bed to look at my clock. It was 9:57 am. My plane leaves in two hours! I quickly jumped out of bed and threw on the clothes I had laid out the night before. Then I went downstairs to fix myself a bagel. My husband Joe had already gone to work and taken our two daughters, Kim and Julie to school. He had left me a note on the fridge saying, “Good luck on the plane ride. I will be praying for you. I love you.” I had almost forgotten about my fear of riding planes! Ever since the 9/11 terrorists attacks when I was in the fifth grade, I have been terrified of riding a plane. I trembled in fear, but I told myself that everything was going to be fine and security is much more advanced than it was back then. I took a deep breath, grabbed my bags, set the alarm, and walked out the door. As I started the car, I put in a Nora Jones c.d. to relax me. After about thirty minutes of driving, I finally made it to the airport. I checked in with my bags, and took a seat waiting to be boarded. I pulled out one of my favorite books, Message in a Bottle, and started reading. After reading the book for a while, I felt as if I was being watched, so I looked up and there was a man sitting right across from me that was completely staring me down. It was rather disturbing, and almost immediately I looked away. When I looked back up, he was gone. The strange thing was that he looked so familiar, yet I couldn’t think of where or how I might’ve known him. He was about 6’1” with very dark features and a stern look. He looked roughly my age and there was something about him that was extremely unpleasant.
After thinking of where I might have seen him before, and not coming up with a response, I went back to my reading until they called my row to aboard the plane. When I was in line to be boarded I felt someone close behind me breathing heavily down my neck. It made me immensely uncomfortable and when I turned around, there the man was again. Once again he stared at me in the face, but this time I stared back at him, trying to cover my fear. He opened his mouth and with a deep intimidating voice he said, “Go.” Startled, I rushed back up to where the line had moved. He followed me, and continued to stay close behind me, which made my heart beat faster and faster with horror.
After what seemed like an hour, I was finally able to sit down in my seat. Unfortunately, the man had gotten the seat next to mine. I didn’t know why I was so afraid of him. There was just something about him that seemed dreadful.
We sat there in silence as the plane took flight. I pulled my book out to avoid the discomfort between us, but I couldn’t focus on what I was reading. I put the book back down and decided to try to take a nap. Even though I was perturbed sitting next to this man, I was exhausted and was able to fall into a peaceful rest. I daydreamed about making it off the plane and seeing all of my high school friends and classmates that I had neglected all of these years.
Suddenly, I was woken up by terrifying screams from the people on the plane. As I opened my eyes, I could see that the man no longer was sitting beside me, but was at the front of the plane pointing a gun to the pilot’s head and claiming he’ll have his revenge on the world. I panicked and screamed and cried with everything in me. As he yelled for everyone to shut up, I prayed for God not to let him do this. As I looked down I could see his wallet that he left on the seat beside mine. His license was on the front cover, and his name read Victor Augusts.
“I know you!” I screamed as everyone, including Victor turned their heads to face me. “We went to school together. It’s me, Beth Thomas. What’s happened to you?” I cried. He walked towards me pointing the gun towards my head. “Please don’t do this.” I begged. “Do you not remember?” he said aggressively, “I told you I would have my revenge.” “Revenge for what?” I asked in fright. “For everything! For every time someone would make fun of me and taunt me. For every time people would call me a low-life. For every time someone would say I wouldn’t make it in this world. I didn’t even get invited to that high school reunion. Sure, no one wants to remember the high school drop out. No one cares about the troublemaker whose father went to jail for killing a man. None of you people deserve to live, including you Beth.” “Your wrong,” I argued, “You’re better than this and you can prove everyone wrong. You can go to that reunion and show everyone that you’ve made it in life. You can overcome this and be an inspiration to everyone else who has had a criminal in their family. You don’t want to be like your father. You know that.” “You’re right,” he realized, “I don’t want to be like my father but he’s who I turned into and I can’t ever changed that,” he whispered as he pulled the trigger to his head.

It was unusually cold on this morning of September 11th, 2001, and my alarm had just went off. The odd but needed 5 am. was when I woke up, because my flight was going to leave around 8:30 and I needed to be there on time. The reason I was flying to San Francisco was I was having a family reunion with my dad, my step-mom, and my step-brothers. So, I jumped in the shower quickly with joy and excitement. I hadn't seen my family in forever since I had gotten a job as the assistant of the manager in Ralph Lauren Headquarters. I had just gotten my hair dried as I heard my phone ring. It was dad, making sure that I was on my way. I talked to him for a few minutes and then hung up. I glanced at the clock and realized…

I woke up tired on a beautiful, sunny, Tuesday morning. It was the day I had to fly to San Francisco for my job on a cruise ship. I had been in between cruises, so I had taken the chance to come see my parents in Newark, New Jersey. Later I realized that it could have cost me dearly. I changed into my pressed, white, long sleeved shirt with khaki pants and my sailors hat that I had to wear for my job as a deckhand. I arrive at Newark Liberty International Airport a hour before my flight, where I hug my parents goodbye. I walk in and go through security easily and go to my gate and wait for thirty minutes until we would be able to board.…

As security has become an annoyance, people’s mindset on flying has changed as well. People began to fear flying more than ever. Along with the always-there fear of a crash, there was now a fear of one’s plane being hijacked, or bombed. Even though the security was at its best, there is always that slim chance that someone missed something, which could cause a disaster. This caused many people to begin to fear flying, and some to abstain from flying as well. This caused many airlines, such as American Airlines, to lose business, and they are still struggling to this day. Many people refused to fly following 9/11 because of a newfound fear, which caused many airlines to begin to struggle to survive.…

Everyone whom I’ve come across since this tragic day has a story to tell, a vivid memory of their exact accounts of that day. For me, when the first plane struck the tower, I shrugged it off as a clip from an upcoming action movie. There was no way an attack in such manner can happen to our country. At the time I was a college freshman, just the fifth day in of me being an “adult”. Upon my arrival on campus, the mood was very somber, another event I did not give too much thought to. Several minutes later, what usually is an early morning class struggling to stay awake and pay attention to the material that was being presented to us, was now a classroom filled with shock, tears and screams. “We are under attack” are the four words that flashed across almost all new stations for what seemed like weeks. The once girl who was excited about embarking on a new journey in adulthood was welcomed with fear, fear that I still live with today, not knowing when and how that next attack would happen.…

For most of the 100 or so sleepy-eyed people boarding the U.S. Airways shuttle to Boston from New York on a recent hazy Saturday morning, the 35-minute flight could not have been a bigger non-event. But that was not the case for about 20 passengers clustered nervously near the gate. Many clutched puzzle books and bags of sour candy as though they held talismans. Some made nervous jokes, others sobbed quietly. “I have pills with me just in case of an emergency,” said a teenage girl who planned to distract herself on the flight with celebrity magazines. Mariasol Flouty, a 44-year-old software developer from White Plains, held fast to her Sudoku book. “I had plane-crash nightmares,” she confessed. “I woke up very tense.” No one was more terrified than Beth Brenner, a 45-year-old mother of two teenagers from Somers, N.Y. “I was hysterical last night,” she said, “but my son said, ‘You’re going to be O.K.’ ” Ms. Brenner was crying quietly on the…

As my father looked around at his classmates some looked shocked, others began to cry because they had families in the buildings. My dad stood frozen in his seat not moving a muscle because they were stiff from nervousness. My dad’s mother was working in the area of the Twin Towers and he wanted to make sure she was okay. About five minutes after the announcement students were able to call family members. My dad without any hesitation called his mother and learned that she was fine, and on the way home. My father’s school dismissed early and he went straight home to his mother. However, my mom was at work during 9/11. My mom works for the Board of Education and was on a phone with a parent about their child’s bus route when the news showed the Twins Towers crashing down. My mother dropped the phone and stood in disbelief with her co-workers. Phones began to ring off the hook, it was the parents of students who were in the city. Worried parents called the bus company about their kids that went to school in the city asking how they could get there children out of the city. Sadly, nothing could be told to the parents because of the chaos in the city all traffic was cut off. My mom noticed something and slow walked to the…

Airports are now more strict. It is almost inconvenient to travel and almost a burden, because of all the airport security. My family and I have to arrive at the airport almost two hours before our flight because of the security lines. Taking off your shoes, taking out your laptop from your case, and putting your electronics in a separate bin is time consuming. TSA, the Transport Security Association, now checks for explosives and performs random screenings and pat downs. They even have a watch list to look out for suspected terrorists. They check your luggage and go through your personal belongings to ensure that there is nothing in them that could potentially harm someone. Before 9/11, people were also able to take liquids on the plane. Now, a person’s worst fear about traveling is worrying that their plane might be hijacked. Because of 9/11 everyone fears that it could happen again. For little kids, like my cousin, they are scarred to even go on a plane because of the life-changing…

At this time one of the stewardesses came to me and gave me special form for US arrival security. I have a thing about filling out the forms and I felt happy. But after a while, I felt annoyed because of the many forms that I received. At last the airplane came to a bumpy landing. The airplane went over a long way and at the end parked near one of the floating aisles. German passengers talked with sleepy and deadpan faces which made me feel tired, unwilling to get up from my seat. The cabin's cold and timeworn air disturbed me during the nine hours flight. I thought that at least I could smell freedom after that, but still I could not smell anything in the air. Leaving the plane, I wobbled and I felt cramped.…

When I was young I always dreamed of flying on a plane. Finally, my dream was coming true, and I was on my way to the USA where I had always known I would end up. This was my first trip on an airplane, and it was also one of the most memorable experiences of my life. I remember everything about my first flight, and it was a lot to remember since it took twenty-seven hours from start to finish. The fight did have one stop in Japan, but that was just to change planes. Once my parents and I got onto the plane and sat down, I started to look at everything around me. I noticed the small white air vents right above my head with little lights next to the vent. It was so great because the controls were right on my armrest. There was a place on the armrest to plug the headphones in in order to listen to music or watch a movie. After everyone got settled into their seats, the airhostess came over the intercom and explained all of the safety procedures. But I am going to tell you; I couldn’t understand what they say, besides staring at their body language. They also showed everyone how to put the seat belts on correctly. After the airhostess was done with…
