Transgender Bathrooms
Although transgender bathroom laws are a very controversial problem there are many feasible solutions. Historically, segregation within public restroom facilities has not always been so common. In fact, the first form of a separated restroom came about in 1887 and did not become widely used until the 1920’s (Restrooms for All… Gender-Neutral Design). A solution to this problem is the creation of gender-neutral, single-occupancy bathrooms. With this concept the state would pass a law mandating that public and sate owned businesses provide consumers with gender-neutral restrooms within their facilities. Gender-neutral single-occupancy bathrooms allow for all individuals utilizing restroom facilities to have privacy and ultimately eliminate conflict over gender identity. In addition, gender neutral bathrooms also benefit parents/caregivers who have children of the opposite sex, individuals who have caregivers who are of the opposite sex, and individuals who feel a sense of discomfort when using gender-specific restrooms (Gender Neutral Bathrooms). Many transgender individuals feel like they cannot use public restroom facilities because of their self-identification and bathroom regulations. This in return can lead to many negative effects for transgender people and individuals of the like. In fact, seventy percent of transgender individuals have reported being verbally harassed when in gender-specific restrooms (Enochs). Of these individuals ten percent have reported being physically assaulted (Enochs). On top of this, there are many health risks, like kidney disease, transgender people experience as a result of avoiding bathrooms. Single-stall restrooms eliminate harassment and allow transgender individuals to feel comfortable while using the restroom. Even today, some states are already starting to utilize more gender-neutral bathroom
