In the Bahamas there are numerous ways to improve our region for tourism industry; but I think that more can be done.
Our Beaches needs to be bigger and more presentable stem from the marketing of the Caribbean as a place of sand, sea and sun. Making beaches larger and more presentable result in the loss of sand and ultimately beach erosion since removal of “rubble” or small stones to clear areas or bathing can contribute to beach erosion. We also need to place more garbage bins and signs on the beaches to remind ourselves to keep our beaches clean.
However, I also think we can develop and construct standards which will ensure that tourism development projects are sympathetic to local culture and natural environment for example the Straw Market, the Downtown Area as well as Hotels to accommodate more tourists. I also think that we can develop adequate tools and techniques to analyze the effect of tourism development projects on heritage sites and ancient monuments as an integral part of cultural and environment impact assessments.
Another way that I can improve my region for tourists is to incorporate sustainable tourism development in the planning process by establishing economic models to help define appropriate levels and types of economic activities for natural and urban areas, monitoring and auditing existing and proposed tourism development, implementing regional environment accounting systems for the tourism industry, developing standards and cultural impact assessments and also undertaking research into the environment, cultural and economic effects.
