To Kill A Mockingbird Chapter 10 Analysis
In the novel To Kill a Mockingbird, the rabid dog, by itself, represents racism. Sheriff Heck reports the rabid dog to Atticus, and to Jem and Scout's surprise Sheriff Heck gives the gun to Atticus. Atticus then kills the dog in one shot. Atticus describes the dog as dangerous as it was alive just like racism in the town. Atticus shooting the dog represents justice prevailing over racism. This scene is parallel to Atticus defending Tom Robinson in the courthouse (“What Does Tim, the Mad Dog, Symbolize in Chapter 10 of "To Kill a Mockingbird”?"). Throughout the case, Scout has flashbacks to when Atticus killed Tim Johnson as it says, "... it was like watching Atticus walk into the street, raise a rifle to his shoulder and pull the trigger..."

Contrarily, the rabid dog, Mayella, and Bob represent moral inequity. The dog's "left" legs are healthy; Mayella's "left" eye is healthy; and Bob is "left" handed. The rabid dog presents a physical threat to Maycomb County, but Mayella and Bob present a social threat--the perpetuation of racism. Atticus's virtue only enables him to eliminate the physical threat. That the jury convicts Tom in the end signals that Atticus loses his battle against racism.…

The Mad Dog: Tim Johnson was a dog infected with rabies that needed to be put down. The dog is a symbol of racism in the novel. Racism is getting out of control (just like the dog), and it needs to be put to a stop. Atticus shoots the dog to put him down but racism is a harder challenge to try and defeat. Atticus has to do things he doesn’t want to, like killing a dog and facing the court room.…

In To Kill A Mockingbird, there is a mad dog called Tim Johnson that has rabies. This dog represents many things. It is a symbol of all the things Atticus will have to do, but would rather not and that the disease of the town has to die but will not be erased immediately. It represents the things that Atticus doesn’t want to fight but has to. When he sees the dog he tells Heck to kill the dog. “ Don’t waste time, Heck,” said Atticus “Go on.” “ Mr.Finch, this is a one-shot job.” Atticus shook his head vehemently” this quote shows that Atticus didn’t want to shoot the dog, but then “ the rifle cracked” Atticus shot the dog. This event is the first of many events were Atticus does something he didn’t want to do. Another event in which Atticus…

The book’s first chapter is about Dryden meeting Rachel. She runs into him early in the morning and asks “Yes or no, she said, I can’t wait any longer”(Lee 6). From how Patrick Lee describes the scene you can clearly tell Rachel does not have a lot of time to waste. She needs to get going as fast as possible. That is why I chose the song Time Bomb by All Time Low. The quote from the song is, “We were like a time bomb set into motion, we knew that we were destined to explode”. This quote works imperviously for the whole book. The two are always being chased down and Rachel constantly has time stuck on her mind. She always has to be on the run from the Government. She makes some friends on this journey, in the little time she feels safe. She has had time stuck in her head since she escaped the laboratory that they were testing her in. Rachel tells Dryden she can not wait very long. She is just trying to keep enough time between her and the government, or at least enough to let her live. She lost all of her memory and that will take time for it to all come back to…

Throughout the novel the mockingbird is a symbol of innocence, of goodness and pure heart that contrasts starkly with the social prejudice and the lack of empathy present in the majority of characters. This is established by Miss Maudie in her explanation as to why Atticus said it’s a sin to shoot mockingbirds: "Mockingbirds don't … eat up people's gardens, don't nest in cribs, they don't do one thing but sing their hearts out for us"(p.49). The symbolism is further reinforced when Mr Underwood likens Tom’s death ‘to the senseless slaughter of songbirds by hunters’ in the Maycomb Tribune; thus further positioning readers to understand that regardless of how solid Atticus’ case was, Tom never had a chance – his innocence was destroyed by the prejudice of society (p.128). Similarly, Scout states that putting Boo Radley on trial would be “sort of like shootin’ a mockingbird” for he is pure of heart and to go “draggin’ him with his shy ways into the limelight… that’s a sin” (p.126). Through the mockingbird symbol, readers are positioned to understand the destructive nature of prejudice and the threat it poses to…

In To Kill a Mockingbird, Jem demonstrates moral growth by understanding the way society works. Boo Radley never wants to come outside of his house, but then he starts to realize that Jem and Scout are in danger, and also that the community he lives in is never going change. After that he decides to come outside and to come to the kids’ rescue. Jem says, “Scout, I think I'm beginning to understand something. I think I'm beginning to understand why Boo Radley's stayed shut up in the house all this time... it's because he wants to stay inside."(Pg. 259) Here, Jem realizes there is not one reason that stops Boo from coming outside, it is just because he wants to. The people of Maycomb misuse authority for prejudice reasons and are expressed using allegory. When Atticus uses the gun to shoot a kill the mad rabid dog, it was done for the good of the community. He was just as reluctant to use the gun then how the jury of Maycomb was more than willing to use their “gun”. “I haven’t shot a gun in thirty years”. (96) Atticus only takes out his gun when it is for the best. When he is defending Tom, he uses everything he’s got because he believes in Tom’s innocence. He knows that a gun is a powerful thing and should only be used if necessary, unlike the jury who uses it only because they can. The gun can be seen as an abuse of power and authority. If used, a judge and a jury can misuse the gun in a case just like how Maycomb’s jury did so in Tom’s trial. They voted Tom guilty even though their job is to apply justice and to be fair to both sides. Because Tom is black and because they are prejudice and can do so, they take out their “gun”. Tim Johnson is another symbol of prejudice. Jem and Scout did not know their father was such a good shooter and they were very surprised to see him shooting: "With…

In To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, society shows that prejudice and discrimination kill the innocence of a mockingbird and puts the town of Maycomb against Tom Robinson because of the cruelty and opinions of blacks. Prejudice and discrimination are widely spread throughout the town and the separation between the people of Maycomb versus Tom Robinson divides among the inequality and racial differences of the community. After Atticus shoots the rabid dog, that comes toward the family and puts the children in danger, Atticus calls Jem over and tells him “Don’t you go near that dog, you understand? Don’t you go near him, he’s just as dangerous dead as alive” (128). The rabid dog is a symbol resembling the town of Maycomb and the citizens’ opinions on discrimination, but the spread of prejudice is…
