What I Would Change About High School

If I had a time machine, and could go back in time, I would go back to

my high school, with a few things in mind. In this essay, I will identify the

five changes I would make to my high school: a jukebox, shared lockers, assigned parking, nicer restrooms, and choices at lunch.

I can still hear all my favorite tunes now. All my friends, and

I would gather every morning in the lunchroom before class would start;

pop a quarter in the jukebox and pick three songs. As we listened, we would

talk about upcoming classes or what we did the night before. Until one shock-

ing morning, when the principal unplugged our beloved jukebox, and rolled

her out the double doors of the lunchroom. The place we called “our hangout”

,became nothing but a memory. It was then everyone decided to listen to mu-

sic in their cars. This made it much easier to skip school. I believe that if a jukebox was still allowed in school, it would give the kids a place to hangout

and not be truant.

Which leads me to my next point; who would think sharing a locker with

your best friend would land you in the principal’s office? When my best

friend decided to bring a pint of Early Times whiskey to school and hide it in

our shared locker, I was nervous to say the least. She would go to the locker

and sneak drinks between classes, and became inebriated. Although everyone

noticed, we both made it to our bus without being called to the office. When

she got home later that afternoon, she was so intoxicated and nauseated, that

she vomited all over her bedroom. The next day at school, after the morning

announcements, we were both called to the office. Where I found my parents

waiting for me. It was difficult to explain to them why I was sharing a locker

with someone so irresponsible and reckless. If students were allowed to

occupy their own locker, then they would individually be held accountable for

its contents.

On a similar note, all students should have assigned parking. When I was

In school parking was not very organized, and you parked wherever you

could find a space. If you did not get to school early you would have to park at

the shopping center across the gate, off school property. One day I remember

in particular, I had to park at the shopping center. After school, I jumped in

my car put it in reverse. Next thing I heard was a loud “pop”. I got out of my

Car, and sure enough my tire was flat. Luckily a friend of mine helped me change my tire. He pulled a welding spike from the rubber. Welding spikes

were usually only obtainable by students who are or were talking welding

classes. I quickly remembered a boy I knew that happened to be taking a

welding class at the vocational school, who often parked in this same area.

If everyone had assigned parking inside school property, the students and

their cars would not be susceptible to such circumstances.

Speaking of bad circumstances, I remember our restrooms were old and

run down. When you first walked in the ladies restroom, if the smell of smoke

did not appall you, then the look of it did. The walls were filled with graffiti,

and missing doors on half the stalls. The sinks would repetitively be clogged,

causing the floors to stay wet. Students did not care if they wrote on the walls,

or ran the sinks over due to prior carelessness. I think if the school would

have done several things, such as: painted the walls, fixed the drains, added

doors for privacy, adequate soap dispensers, hand dryers, and teachers to

monitor the bathrooms between classes. Then students would be less likely to

make a mess or disrespect the school restrooms.

Among the upgrades, it would have been great if we had a menu with

choices at lunchtime. When I was in school no one had a choice, everyone

either had to eat what was on the menu, or not at all. A lot of times the

students would take off to the plaza, and eat at one of the fast food restau-

rants, which caused the school to lose better funding for lunch. Students were

not aware that by not eating at school, it actually impacted their ability to

have a better menu choice. But I suppose it’s a catch 22; if school had the

funding for hotdogs, hamburgers, or pizza, (maybe even a salad bar), that

would have keep us in the lunchroom.

It has been at least thirty years since I was in high school, and there has

been a lot of changes since then. Although they might not have been the ones

I mentioned in this essay, a change for the better is always great. Improving

the school systems and branches of it only makes education better for our fu- ture generation.
