Is There Good in Everyone?
While reading the stories of this week I was drawn to how much the characters were filled with hope only to have their happiness and excitement dashed by disappointment. I could not help but feel this is how life tends to be. Just when things are looking like all dreams and expectations might come about, someone or something comes along and changes everything. This was how it is in F. Scott Fitzgerald’s story “Babylon Revisited.” I also noticed a similar theme while reading Flannery O’Connor’s “A Good Man Is Hard to Find.” The endings of these two stories could not have turned out different, but the plot was the same. The characters start out with high hopes and by the end of the tale disappointment is all they get.
In the story “A Good Man Is Hard to Find” My impression of the characters in the family , Bailey, the wife and the children is that they are all rude and very disrespectful toward the grandmother. The family goes on a trip and winds up having an accident, which puts them at the wrong place at the wrong time. This accident occurs when the grandmother asks to see her family home and has the father turn down a road that ends up being a wrong turn. When the family has a car accident due to grandmother’s cat, who was not supposed to be on the trip, they come across “The Misfit” an escape killer. The father, Bailey dislikes the cat and shows no real emotion towards it. He even threw it up against a tree when the car crashes, out of anger towards the grandmother for bringing it. Bailey takes out his anger for his mother on the cat that represents her. Honestly, I thought “The Misfit” would spare the grandmother, so it surprises me completely when he shoots her. It is a brutal murder of the entire family. There is a hint of irony in the story due to the fact that the grandmother was the reason in which the entire family was murdered. She wants to go down the sketchy old dirt road to see this beloved plantation which she later...
