In the technological industry of personal computers and MP3 players there is one name that is dominating this field, Apple Computers Inc. The success of Apple in recent years has lead to an increasing number of competitors trying to get their own piece of this technological market. Determining how to handle competition are demonstrated in the Wall Street Journal articles: Apple’s iPod Faces Challenge From Cellphones, Microsoft’s Zune Challenges iPod, PC Makers Take a Stylish Turn to Tackle Apple, Rivals Imitate Apple’s Success. In order for companies to become as successful as the current market leader they need to analyze Apple’s strategies. Just as Apple needs to find new ways to expand on their total market and continue their dominance in these personal electronics industry.
Apple Computers Inc. was established in 1977 and ever since have made a slow but sure climb to the top of handheld and other personal electronic devices, largely because of the innovative ideas that have been developed in recent years. Apple must consistently look at Michael Porters five competitive forces model to determine their place in the market. The first force they must look at is industry competitors and in the field of personal computers there are many to be considered such as, Dell, Hewlett-Packer and Sony. (Kotler & Keller, 2006) One step these competitors are trying is by changing their PCs style and design to be more attractive to consumers. According to Forrester Research, consumers are willing to pay $150 to $250 more per machine for models that are more stylish.
