7 March 2011 “Uncertainty Has Celebrated Its Death”

Love is Lost. Love is Forbidden. Love is Found. In order to lose love, you must first obtain love. In order to find love, you must first know what love is. In order for love to be forbidden, it must first be permissible. These are the misconstrued thoughts of the characters in The God of Small Things.

Figuratively speaking, there is a fight against the caste system in India as to whom the characters should love. This enables them to fight for love by breaking the archetypal tradition of what love should look like. All events lead up to the ultimate sacrifice, which is Velutha’s death; he has come to redeem those who are lost in a sea of uncertainty in relation to love. Although the caste system played a part in the brutal murder, Velutha’s death was relevant to the Forbidden Love Laws because it was his purpose to break all love barriers. Arundhati Roy presents love on a silver platter, waiting for the readers to intake every ounce of what she has to offer; permitting them to consciously think about what love is and how easily it can be misapprehended. The recurring theme throughout the story is the archetype of love; whether it is conditional or unconditional versus an obligation or a natural force.

Ammu was directly exposed to the false meaning of love. Because her father was a “jealous man” (46), he would advertently beat her mother every night “with a brass flower vase”
(47). Since “human beings were creatures of habit, it was amazing the kind of things they could get used to” (49). Unfortunately, Ammu was a victim of this “habit.” Due to her parents’ miscommunication towards one another, Ammu restricts her love for her children; she uses this method to “protect” them from being rejected or to feel as if they have never been loved. Therefore, loving her children is a compulsion rather than it being a natural

    The focus of this essay is to explore the different conflicts and resolutions that are undergone between racially, religiously, and culturally diverse mothers and daughters-in-law. These different conflicts and resolutions are analyzed in two literary works: Day of Honey: A Memoir of Food, Love, and War by Annia Ciezadlo, which takes place in post 9/11 America and the Middle East, as well as Love Medicine by Louise Erdrich, set in rural North Dakota from 1934 to 1984. A critical analysis reveals that the daughters-in-law of these two literary works are able to overcome their differences with their mothers-in-law through selfless acts, and forge new meaning and relationships that fulfill their lives. Annia’s relationship with her mother-in-law, Umm Hassane, begins with mutual respect and love, but transforms into a game of proofs in which the resolution takes time and hard work to achieve. In Erdrich’s novel, the relationship of Rushes Bear and her daughter-in-law, Marie, is a years-long bitter struggle in which surrender brings about a similar kind of respect and love. In this essay, through an analysis of the different conflicts and methods of reconciliation, I will argue that between the racially, religiously, and culturally diverse in-laws of these two books, respect is something that comes hard earned. These daughters-in-law are able to prove that they are worthy of their mothers-in-law’s respect through demonstrations of sacrifice.…

    In A.B Yehoshua’s novel,The Lover, a chain of first person monologues are described. These monologues are set up in a mixture of flashbacks and conflicts that the characters undergo. This unique structure gives the novel a special meaning towards its description of the characters, and the story itself. For example, the character Asya is described to be a very hardworking independent woman. But, she has a odd relationship with her husband, Adam, who is a diligent man in charge of a successful mechanics garage. Throughout the story Adam and Asya never, hug never kiss, and they barley speak to one another. Meaning that this structure lets The Lover symbolize the loneliness and insufficient amount of recognition towards each of the characters.For instance, Daffi, the daughter of Asya and Adam, is a teenage girl in lack of attention. So, because of her parents barely paying any type of attention to her, she spends her time wandering the streets most of the day trying to keep herself productive by either stalking people or just walking around. After awhile,she then begins to connect with her fathers worker, Na’im, who also is alone and has no attention from anyone, and in the end they both fall in love. This basically shows how this novel details the meaning of loneliness and the importance of love.…

    The three main archetypes that were notable throughout the novel were the mother archetype who was represented by Nirmala; the villain which was portrayed by Ammayya; and Raju as the wise old man. Anita Rau Badami’s novel uses the horrible effects of death and what it does to a family to reveal the character’s flaws and weaknesses. While reading this novel many emotions and feelings are discovered through the usage of archetypes. When an author uses the archetypal approach, he or she selects a universal theme through which to tell their story. Loss and Grief is an underlying universal theme in this novel. This theme is shown as the family learns how to cope with the death of Maya, a very loved daughter, sister, mother and friend. The spark of insight that can come from making a connection between characters in this novel to the archetypes ultimately helps the reader find the essential truth about certain matters in the novel. Using an archetypal approach to literature means that there is a collection of symbols, images, characters, and motifs that evokes basically the same response in all people. To conclude, archetypes are important in this novel because they help to explain why characters have certain traits and it also helps to understand the text better. If the reader applies their knowledge of archetypes while reading the novel, it will definitely help to make the text more understandable and it will also make it a more enjoyable…

    Love is the emotional investment that pushes people to their limits. This is demonstrated in the film “Pieces of April”, when our protagonist April is pushed to do something for the sake of love, even though she dreaded every moment of it. She tries to prepare a Thanksgiving meal for her and her family with hopes to be reunited after years of negligence. Although she tries to conceal her exhilaration it is clear and obvious that she is eager for her family’s arrival. Her attempt at cooking a meal for her family and going through so much difficulty is not so literal. It represents the notion of how love can push people into doing impetuous things. The deficient love of a girl for her family can make her do so much. The relationship between April and her mother, Joy, resemble the relationship of Tiffany Chan and her mother from the short story "Of Kin and Kind". Both the mother and daughter relationship is very rigid and tense. Tiffany claims that her and her mother may be of the same blood but they are anything but alike, by declaring "We were kin, but less than kind". This quote can also reflect April’s view on her and her mother’s relationship. We all believe that our similarities brings us close and our difference separates us without knowing that the only thing still holding our ties is the love we have for each other. That love is what makes us forget the conflicts and disagreements we may have and reminds us that no matter how different we are, we learn to accept and love each other. Bobby, April’s boyfriend, also illustrates how love can give people unbelievable strength and make them overlook the concept of possible. He claims his mother lifted the car to save his life after they had been in an accident. He carries his belief and shows what a person can accomplish if they carry love within themselves, “When you have love you do things you never thought you could.     The setting of the novel is in an area surrounded by nature it contains aspects of books written in a pastoral form. However, Roy often subverts this ‘natural nirvana’ by surreptitiously implying that nature is s a ‘force to be reckoned with’ and doesn’t lionise it as other pastoral novelists would. In fact she goes as far as likening the rain to “silver ropes slam[ming] into loose earth, ploughing it up like gunfire”. The pastoral tendencies of the book is also contrasted against the harsh storyline much like ‘Of Mice And Men’ which subverts your expectation of a nice book with a happy ending and gives you quite the opposite. Arundhati Roy is extremely politically literate and at times the novel can be perceived to be an extension of her views. On the last page of the first chapter Roy makes reference to the “love laws” which dictate “who should be loved. And how. And how much.” Her disdain for this elitist view of the caste system and the way people such as Pillai stuck to it so is displayed through the relationship between Ammu and Velutha and the constant references to the Sound of Music. Roy does not vehemently stick to one genre, she creates her own by adopting a ‘magpie ethic’ towards her form and stealing certain aspects of many different genres to form her own which is appropriate for her novel.…

    Love is a complex emotion. It has the ability to make you feel like you are flying, literally touching and seeing heaven. Yet it also has the ability to break your heart into a thousand pieces, hurt you in ways you never could have dreamed possible, make you feel all at once like you are living a nightmare and dying at the same time. Love can be wondrous when given freely and unconditionally, or it can be dangerous when wielded as a weapon. There is no love more multifaceted then that of a parent and child. The relationship between Vivi and Sidda personifies both ends of the love spectrum, oftentimes, to the extreme. Through Rebecca Wells’s “Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood” we are able to see Vivi’s beautiful, life giving love of Sidda, as well as the ease with which she brandishes her manipulation of the most painful aspects of love. Through Sidda we witness a child’s desperate need for approval, an unending desire to please and placate a mother who is both emotionally absent, and emotionally smothering, sometimes in the same breath.     What is love? Often enough, as a hormone-struck teenager, I am lectured on what love is not. According to my mother, father, grandmother, aunts, uncles, and every adult figure that has ever made a guest-star appearance in the long-winded romance novel that is my life, love is NOT the warm cuddly feeling I get when I see a cute boy at school.     In the movie Romeo and Juliet, film directed by Franco Zeffirelli in 1968. I chose love as archetypal. “Why do we struggle with love or why does love so often get so difficult? We as people are all born with the character of love and most people want to be in a relationship. So why do so many relationships go wrong? As with Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet we often believe that are love will be so powerful that we block all the family history and conflicts and all the drama that comes when two people fall in love. We as people in the beginning of our relationships always fantasize a love story like Romeo and Juliet and believe that our love will be written down in history. But more often than not we find that our love stories end in a tragedy for some reason” (Dr. Gary Trosclair, 2010).
