The Flood Stories of the Ancient near East
Allie Darling
9/8/13
The Flood Stories of Ancient Near East are very interesting and show what was going on throughout many parts of the East when the floods came through. Some are very similar and sometimes make you think that they are actually the same story while others make you wonder if they are even talking about a flood. One similarity of the flood stories is that In the story of Epic of Gimgamesh and in the flood story from the Book of Genesis both have people who get on ships to brave the flood. In the Epic of Gimgamesh It says “O man of Shuruppak, son of Ubartutu; Tear down the house and build a boat” In the Book of Genesis it says, “Noah and his company in the ark survived.” Both of these stories talk about how Utanapishtim and Noah bring people or animals on to a ship to survive the flood. Another similarity of these two stories is that at the end of the floods they are both acknowledged by their own Gods. Utanapishtim actually becomes a God after the flood. It says, “Previously Utanapishtim was a human being. But now let Utanapishtim and his wife become like us, the Gods!” In the Book of Genesis it says, “God spoke to Noah and to his sons with him: “I now make my covenant with you and with your descendants after you” This is saying that Noah was rewarded by God and to all of his descendants because of what Noah did. Both of the stories have two people getting rewarded by their own God.
One thing that is different between these stories is that in the story of the Sumerian king List, it talks about the rulers, or Kingships, of the land while the story of the Epic of Gilgamesh and the Book of Genesis talk about people and beings that went through the flood and had to try to survive the flood.
Another Similarity of these stories is that in the story of the Epic of Gilgamesh and the story of the Book of Genesis talks about how Utanapishtim and Noah both sent birds to look for land but both came back

The epic of "Gilgamesh," the book of "Genesis" and Ovid’s "Metamorphoses" poem all have several similarities; some are the creation story, a story of a fall, and a flood. Among these similarities, there are also distinct differences. In terms of similarities, all three stories present the creation story of the world out of chaos. " Genesis" and "Metamorphoses" state that man was created on god's image and that’s when humans were first brought into life. On the other hand, looking at some differences, Adam and Eve were created by god in "Genesis".…

There are many similarities in the stories “How Stories Came to Earth” and “Coyote Steals Fire”. The first example of a similarity is that both tricksters both use anthropomorphism. Both the animals talk and walk. Another example is that the tricksters both deal with a powerful force in their stories. In both of the stories the more superior person is a god of some sort.…

The Epic of Gilgamesh had one of three Akkadian flood myths. The Sumerians also created their own story of a flood; where the biblical flood story, found in Genesis 9, has a lot of similarities. They are similar because they both had a global floodsent by god or gods which was done to control people. The gods contacted the hero and told him to build the ark. Both Arks were very large and contained different types of aminals. In the end the hero of course got too choose how it ended by releasing the animals, and the the hero sacrifsed the gods, who blessed…

Before the flood, Utnapishtim saw a god named Ea. Ea warned Utnapishtim that a flood was going to destroy the earth’s contents and that he needs to build an enormous boat. “Ea, who was present at their council, came to my house and, frightened by the violent winds that filled the air, echoed all that they were planning and had said, Man of Shurrupak, he said, tear down your house and build a ship” (The Epic of Gilgamesh, Tablet XI). Utnapishtim took all the kinds of animals, and his family members, plus some other humans into his boat. Shamash the sun god showered down loaves of bread and rained down wheat to prepare him for the days the people in the boat must stay onboard. Noah’s flood was alike in the overall idea, but many of the specifics are different. Instead of appearing in a dream, Noah’s Yahweh directly announced that there would be a global flood that would wipe away mankind. “And God said to Noah, ‘I have determined to make an end of all flesh, for the earth is filled with violence through them. Behold, I will destroy them with the earth’” (Genesis 6:13). Noah built an oblong box-shaped boat and filled the boat with his family members and all kinds of animals. Both boats loaded up and shut the single door, ready for the flood to begin.…

    Noahs Ark and Gilgamesh

The Epic of Gilgamesh Flood Story and the Noah’s Ark story from the Bible are similar in many ways. They are similar in the sense that they both got rid of their houses and all of their belongings. Noah received his message from God to start building the boat while Gilgamesh received his message in a dream. But in the story of Noah’s Ark, Noah was to build the boat to exact measurements which were 300 cubits for its length, 50 cubits for its width, and 30 cubits for its height. Where in the Epic of the Gilgamesh it was to be built “shall have her dimensions in proportion, Her width and length in harmony.” The story never tells how big the boat was for all living seeds. So as a reader we can picture Noah’s massive boat where we cannot do the same for Gilgamesh’s boat They were both were to build enormous boats that would be able to hold all forms of life. In the Epic of Gilgamesh Flood Story, Gilgamesh fills his boat with all forms of life along with silver and gold. Whereas Noah built the boat only to fit all animals and his family. The Epic of Gilgamesh fought through only six days and seven nights where Noah fought through forty days and forty nights. But we do know the Bible uses the number 40 as a way of saying a long period of time. Both Gilgamesh and Noah released a Raven and a Dove but Noah released 3 doves while Gilgamesh only released a swallow after the release of other two birds. The Gilgamesh Epic has close parallels with the account of Noah’s Flood. Its close similarities are due to its closeness to the real event. However, there are major differences as well. Everything in the Epic, from the polytheism to the absurd cubical ark, as well as the worldwide flood legends, show me that the Genesis account is the original, while the Gilgamesh Epic is a distortion.…

Both the story from Gilgamesh and the Genesis occur in the Iraqi/Turkey area. This information helps provide a strong connection between the tales. During the ages when Gilgamesh was written and even the Genesis, books were not readily available to the general public, stories were instead spread by word of mouth. This could explain the large similarities both stories share. It could also explain why both stories also share differences. Like the children game "telephone", where a sentence is shared secretly to a chain of individuals, only to be revealed that by the end of the chain the sentence has been changed, the Genesis could be recording a story that had been gradually altered over the years.…

After reading the flood story of Gilgamesh and the flood story in Genesis it is obvious that there is a relationship between the two. If someone were to tell you a summary of one, they would ultimately be telling you a summary of the other. But just because the overviews are the same does not mean that they are not different. The Epic of Gilgamesh and the story of Genesis have very minor differences, but these differences make each story distinct.…

Both stories have a main character that is sent by a god to build a boat to survive an upcoming flood also delivered by a god intended to wipe out all of mankind. The two characters contrast in the reason they are called to build a boat and survive the flood. Utnapishtim is warned by Ea for unknown reasons behind Enlist back even though he wanted no survivors. Noah is chosen by God because “Noah found favor with the Lord” (Genesis 45). This shows that Noah is better suited for the job and chosen to restart the population because of how righteous he is. Despite them being warned for…

“Build a boat”, they said. “The flood will come”, they said. The flood stories of “The Epic of Gilgamesh” and “The Genesis” are both accounts of the great disasters that wiped out most of the population of Earth that have both differences and similarities on what happened when the floods occurred. These stories parallel each other in many areas including the warning given to an individual being, the instruction to build an ark, the instruction to bring a sampling of species on board, the method by which land was eventually discovered at its conclusion, and the sacrifice offered by each at the end. While very few, there are some differences in the tales. The length of the strife, and the way that the individual was warned are just some of these differences.…

For instance, the ark in Genesis was three-hundred cubits long and thirty cubits high. This supposedly would have provided enough room for two of every species of animal. However, the dimensions of the ark in Gilgamesh were slightly different. The ark was ten dozen cubits high, had 6 decks, and one acre of floor space. Therefore, the ark from mesopotamian myth was much taller than the Hebrew ark. Another difference would be the timeframe of the flooding. In Genesis, the flood was caused by springs and by rain; it lasted 40 days and nights. In contrast, in Gilgamesh the flood came from rain only and lasted 6 days and nights. A final difference was the ending. After the rain had stopped both survivors sent out birds to search for dry land, however, the species differed. In Genesis, Noah sent out a raven, and a dove. The raven and the first dove, both returned because there was no place to land, for the earth was covered in water. Next he sent out the dove again, but this time it returned with an olive leaf. Then Noah waited a week, and sent out the dove again, only this time it never returned. In contrast, Utnapishtim sent out a dove, swallow, and a raven. First he sent the dove, which later returned like the swallow afterwards. Finally, Utnapishtim sent the Raven, which never…

In addition, the famous Flood itself, noted for its similarity to the Noahic story from the Old Testament, is the result of wrathful gods, angry, essentially, that mankind is too loud and clamorous. Only Utnapishtim, warned ahead of time by the goddess Ea to "take up into [a] boat the seed of all living creatures," survives with his family. Utnapishtim is rewarded with immortality for his exertions. The relationship between mortals and gods, therefore, is often contentious, and those who have not been chosen as favorites by the deities are condemned to suffer.…

Next, God as a loving partner and God as a warrior are compatible with Noah and the Flood. As a loving partner, God allowed Noah to preach for 120 years about the flood (Genesis 6:3). This gave the people sufficient amount of time to harken to the words of Noah. Everyone had a chance to trust Noah and be saved. God showed compassion towards Noah by…
