The Dark Ages
The Dark Ages is a period name used in the same breath as Middle Ages. Particularly, it refers to that time period when the fall of the Roman Empire began and the rise of the Renaissance period and the Age of Discovery. Approximately, the Dark Ages were identified as the time from 400-1500 A.D. The term Dark Ages was initially introduced by Francesco Petrarca, an Italian scholar, as a reference to the low quality literature and scriptures during the time, including the period’s lack of culture and advancement in medieval Europe.
There is a misconception that the Dark Ages represented a time when people were too backward when it came to their thinking processes. There is an ongoing debate among historians that point out that the term Dark Ages may not be a really accurate when it comes to describing the period. For one, many believe that the Greek and Roman civilizations were far advanced in their time. Both civilizations have contributed so much to the advancement of technology at the time, including science, architecture, government, and philosophy. The paper will identify the various types of societies present during the Dark Ages and their corresponding attributes, including how it has influenced modern times. It will also describe the different kinds of literature and scriptures available during the Dark Ages and how they have prepared to deviate from its image and merge and apply what they have in modern times. Additionally, the paper will discuss the role that Ireland played, that is, as a liberator of civilization. Finally, a discussion on the functions of knights will also be presented, including how it relates to honor and the Code of Chivalry that was popular in those days and its relevance in today’s modern sense of
