The Cross Controversy

The symbol of the cross is one of the most controversial symbols ever known. It has many meanings for religious groups, social groups, symbolic meanings and there are many different types of crosses. Without question it has been abused, misused and worshiped.

A cross is a geometrical figure consisting of two lines or bars perpendicular to each other, dividing one or two of the lines in half. The lines usually run vertically and horizontally; if they run diagonally, the design is technically termed a saltire which is generally used in flags. There are many types of crosses, all used for different symbolic reasons. It represents many different things to many different people.



In the christian religion, the cross represents what Jesus died upon in order to save sinners from eternal damnation. God fearing christians believe that Jesus accepted the crusifixion on a cross for the benefit to us all. The cross symbol is used by over two billion Christians and is considered to be sacred. The cross was not considered a typically Christian symbol until the seventh century. (Early images of Jesus depicted him either as a lamb or carrying one - an echo of views of Hermes and Osiris as a "Good Shepherd".) To Christians, the cross has become a symbol of the redemption of the world's sins through the death of Jesus. For all christiansthe cross has deep symbolic meaning of identification with their faith, church and community.



In America, the Burning Cross is considered one of the hallmarks of the Ku Klux Klan (KKK). As self-confessed ultra-right nationalists, they use the Burning Cross symbol to terrorise their intended victims. The KKK acts against any group they feel are causing harm to America; including African Americans, Jews, Catholics, immigrants, gays and anyone who supports such 'evil and dangerous elements'.
