The Commonality and Differences of the Hispanic Culture in the United States

Hispanics represent a variety of cultures from Mexico, the Caribbean Islands, Central and South America. Of the many Hispanic cultures now living in the United States, four will be used to examine the political, linguistic, religious, and socio-economic behavior of Hispanics.

Mexican-Americans:

Mexican-Americans have either had families that have lived within the United States for over 400 years, some not as long, and others have just recently emigrated to the U.S. from Mexico. The Spanish of Mexicans is influenced by the Spaniards who occupied Mexico and a heavy Latin influence as the policy of linguistics, a sort of lingua franca, was greatly influenced by the Spanish Crown who was often at odds with the Catholic Church in this regard, which also reveals quite a bit about the religious influences of Mexican-Americans, who are primarily Catholic, although there is a variety of religious sects within that culture, such as the Santero tradition, and many others. (1) (2) Because Mexican-Americans are one of the most economically disadvantaged groups in the United States, (3), religion plays a big part in how they cope with this disadvantage, and while there are claims that they are underrepresented in politics, there is The League of Latin American Citizens, a political rights advocate group for all Hispanics, founded by Mexican Americans in 1929.

Puerto Rican-Americans:

The language of Puerto Rico is considered to be a Caribbean variant of Spanish that is a combination of Spanish, Taino, (the indigenous language), and Kongo, which was imported from West African Slaves. (4) However, Puerto Rican-Americans also can be people who only speak English, are bilingual, or only speak Spanish. While Puerto Ricans can have a variety of genetic influences and not at all look “Hispanic”, it is not how they look; however, that is a determination for many Puerto

    As a son of Mexican American immigrants, Richard Rodriguez recounts the story of his childhood and his struggle to assimilate into American culture. In Aria: A memoir of a Bilingual Childhood, Rodriguez always felt like an outcast whenever he set foot outside of his house. As a young child, he exclusively spoke Spanish to members of his household and tried his best to learn and speak English in the real world. He “regarded Spanish as a private language. It was a ghetto language that deepened and strengthened [his] feeling of public separateness” (Rodriguez 505) because it identified him as a member of his family and it served as a link to his own Mexican heritage. By speaking Spanish, he communicates a certain level of intimacy with all of his relatives. However, as his narrative progresses, he finds himself slowly breaking away from that intimacy as he begins to speak more English, both by force and social pressure. Teachers scolded him if he spoke anything but English and his peers Americanized his name into Richard (rather than calling him Ricardo.) He began to feel like a traitor by mastering this “public language” when his relatives began treating him differently. His bilingual childhood was an enormous adversity that Rodriguez had to overcome.…

    Which brings us to our next branch of the Community Cultural Wealth Theory—linguistic capital. Linguistic capital is the collection of "intellectual and social skills learned through communication that occurs in more than one language and/ or style." (Yosso 2006: 43) This is tied in with bilingual education and should be seen by all as a positive rather than a negative because it is very easy for children from struggling families to blame their culture; it makes perfect sense why young bilingual children would be ashamed of their home language because they are forced to conform to their surrounding expectations. The idea behind this branch is the idea that Chicanos/as have been exposed to more than one language and gain cultural communication skills that translate into the academic and even social settings. Quite often children from such homes takes part in storytelling. According to Yosso, skills obtained from this activity include: memorization, attention to significant detail, pauses for dramatic effect, comedic timing, facial expressions, specific vocal tones, volume, and rhythm. Those same skills used for effective story telling crossover to various language styles to appeal to different audiences. Even more benefits are made for children who translate for their parents.…

    Becoming Mexican American: A study into the cultural developments of Mexican immigrants to the United States The purpose of this paper is to review and discuss the inviting work of George Sánchez, Becoming Mexican American: Ethnicity, Culture and Identity in Chicano Los Angeles, 1900-1945. While reviewing this work of Sánchez, the essay will make use of an article written by Grace Peña Delgado relating to the immigration issues of the United States in the early twentieth century.     Today, many of the politics we see in Mexico do still reflect the centralized and hierarchical system of the Aztecs, but we see much change in the country after the arrival of Europeans. Until the 15th century, native peoples inhabited the current Mexico.     In Tanya Barrientos’ “Se Habla Español” she explains how she was born into a Spanish speaking family but when they moved to American when she was three, her and her family stopped speaking English. They way she looked at it was back then, speaking Spanish meant all you could do was wait tables and clean hotel rooms and were constantly being looked down on and criticized. Because of this Barrientos enjoyed her Americanized self and that she often acted as to not know any Spanish to feel superior.
