Telecommuting Proposal

Companies all around us are embracing a practice that improves employee morale, increases productivity, and helps decrease traffic congestion – telecommuting. According to a 2008 study by the American Electronics Association, 45 million Americans already work from home at least one day a week (Levit, 2009). Telecommuting is contributing to a company’s bottom line—cost savings and increased productivity— while providing life balance for employees.

I am interested in exploring the possibility of working from home. I would like to propose trying telecommuting one day a week on a three – months trial basis. Then, depending on my quality of work and productivity, we can continue, cancel, or increase that schedule.

I have taken the time to research what other companies have done to allow this privilege, and I hope you will consider my request based on my past performance, and my contributions to this company. I would like to meet with you to discuss this proposal, and share how a telecommuting arrangement would work for our company. Before we meet, please consider the following information.

What Are The Advantages Of Telecommuting?
• Increased productivity. With fewer interruptions I will be able to increase my focus, and complete the tasks quicker and with better quality. Studies show that telecommuters are typically able to get 10 to 30 percent more work done due to the reduced number of interruptions they encounter compared to a normal day in the office (Shryock, 2009).

• Employee retention. Another important advantage of telecommuting is that it helps retain qualified employees. Research indicates that employees who have an option of telecommuting are happier and feel more valued by their employer. Providing the opportunity of greater life balance improves employee morale, reduces stress level, and, ultimately, retains valuable employees.
