Telecommuting
Working sometimes might be a tiring thing because of commuting. When it comes to choosing jobs, people always care about location a lot. Telecommuting is a new work arrangement in which employees enjoy flexibility in working location and hours. In other words, the daily commute to a central office is replaced by telecommunication links. Some people choose to telecommute while others choose to commute to the places of works. Work in an office is better than telecommuting because of three reasons.
In the first place, the most important reason for my view is that all work involves teamwork. Sophisticated work usually requires a lot of communication between different departments. Looking back to the time when I was a sales representative of a garment trading company, I had to ask my coworkers in the shipping department whether the goods could be delivered on time. The usual phenomenon in my former company was that every person was overloaded with work so that the coworker I asked might not pick up the phone or reply to my email. I would have to go to the shipping department in person to make sure that the person who was in charge of shipping my order would do his/her work. At the time I negotiated with others, my coworker, who was in the same group with me, had to keep working on the task to make sure everything was all right.
In the second place, there is a reason for me to consider giving as much flexibility as possible to be wrong. One does not have to go very far to see that even the most capable person could make mistakes. Not to mention there are some novices in companies who might need others’ help frequently. It is difficult for people to get help through the Internet because sometimes the problems are far too complicated to be explained or it takes time to get others to understand. Hence, another equally important aspect is that while working as a telecommuter saves time on commuting, it wastes time on communication.
