The phone system at work is a PBX phone system and there is little information on the local intranet about it. It is controlled by a group within Corporate I.T. The one thing that is known is that the phone use dual tone multi-frequency. No companies in this country should still be using rotary phones anymore. The difference between rotary and dual tone multi-frequency telephones is that rotary send interrupted electrical pulses and the DTMF is a method of instructing a telephone switching system. The main difference between the two types is that rotary is analog and DTMF is digital. A rotary type phone also is a mechanical switch type that uses clicks rather then tones. It is very easy to distinguish which type is which just by the appearance of the phone. I rotary phone will have a dial that you manually rotate clockwise to dial the numbers and a DTMF type phone will have push buttons.
Wide Area Telecommunications Service or WATS is a line of service that is very similar to an 800 number. Because of the advancements in the telecom industry, this type of service is not typically used today. They were primarily used in the 1960’s all the way through to the 1990’s and have been replaced with a service called Wide Area Network Systems or WANS. Leased lines are another antiquated service that was nothing more then a point to point connection between to places. A dedicated line that was just for interoffice types of communication. This was a simple solution where lines would be leased from the phone company to have a dedicated line that connected two or more offices.
Private Branch Exchange or PBX is a phone system that is typically housed at the company it is used at. This system is used by companies and enterprises to handle and route the calls coming into and out of the company.
