The use, acceptance, adoption and application of internet technology to businesses to boast their performances are not something new. Saffu et al., (2008), states that there has been a significant increase in the use and application of e-commerce in businesses in the past decade. E-commerce has benefits such as reduction in costs, increased business opportunities, reduced lead time and providing more personalized service to the customers (Turban et al., 2008). Internet banking or e-banking is one of the many tools of e-commerce adopted by the banking industry. Tools of information technology such as internet banking have significantly improved the quality of services offered by the banking industry and/or financial institutions (Dawes and Rowley, 1998). Currently, there are thousands and thousands of e-banking web sites all over the world. Botswana is a developing country, located in the southern part of Africa. She has a population of just about 2 million. Being a developing country, internet technology has not been quite a thing for the citizens. Majority of people who get to use the internet are those in tertiary schools, work places and government departments, since they can get to use internet there. “In October 30th 2008, Botswana completed the multi-million pula Trans-Kalahari fibre-optic project, covering approximately 2000 kilometres. The project is expected to act as a catalyst to the growing ICT industry in the country.” (Botswana Guardian., 2008)…

The value proposition for online banking is to ensure customers how valuable and useful online banking can be for them. Customers who engage in online banking are able to constantly keep track of their spending, pay bills online, transfer money between accounts, and know where their money is going out and coming from. Although not mentioned here, with today’s advanced technology, a user of online banking has the ability to virtually bring their bank with them wherever they go with the use of smartphone apps. By heavily advertising the advantages of online banking—the time, convenience, and ease of using the product—customers may start to see the usefulness. The article states that some customers were reluctant to use online banking due to the belief that Internet security was low. Although this may seem like an issue that the bank has no control of, there are still things that could be done to reduce the fear; advertise why Dakota Bank’s online banking is secure, provide tips of how the customers can make their accounts as secure as they can possibly be, and provide them with information about what the bank will do to help and fix the situation would the unlikely event of online banking theft occur.…

1.1.1 Banks have conventionally been in the vanguard of harnessing technology to develop their products, services and competence. They have, over a long time, been using electronic and telecommunication networks for delivering a extensive variety of value added products and services. The delivery channels include direct dial – up connections, private networks, public networks etc and the devices include telephone, Personal Computers including the Automated Teller Machines, etc. With the popularity of PCs, easy access to Internet and World Wide Web (WWW), Internet is progressively more used by banks as a channel for receiving instructions and delivering their products and services to their clientele. Technology today has become synonymous with banking and Indian banks have put in place a fairly strong infrastructure to leverage its benefits. IT has made a visible difference in the functioning of banks and conduct of banking operations. Banks have benefitted immensely due to scaling up of business and growth in volumes, the journey has been beneficial for the customers too, with improvement in customer service quality. While for larger banks the IT capital expense to total IT expense ratio has stabilized to approximately 18%, smaller banks are increasing their capital expenditure to acquire IT infrastructure, with approximately 54% capital expenditure. Most banks have also put up a robust mechanism for governance and management of IT assets with board level committees and alignment of functional and technical teams for IT implementation. In the future banks will have to focus on two major aspects – delivering customer satisfaction and driving business optimization. Banks today have built up significant database about the customer – demographics, transactions and behavioral data. However the key is to derive information from this data to deliver business impact. Information and technology will have to be separated with substantial focus on information. Banks will need to have a significant level of integration of data warehouses and analytical capability both in terms of people and tools to face this challenge. In addition banks will also need to have a robust customer life cycle management program to effectively utilize the information. The second significant challenge is driving business optimization which broadly deals with highest level of revenues or…
