Technology: Blessing or Curse?
To determine whether technology is a blessing or a curse is one of the hardest decisions one can make. This has generated a big controversy, leading into the creation of two different positions and views: supporters and opponents.
From the supporters’ point of view, technology improves our quality of life. Some of the most important discoveries we have done would not have been possible without the usage of technology. Things like the internet have definitely changed the perspective we had of distances. Now we can just connect to the World Wide Web and communicate with people who are miles away from us, all this in real time, or if you prefer, we could just take a plane and fly overseas to visit them. This is only one of the many examples we could give to prove the fact that technology is a blessing and that our life would not be the same without it.
On the other hand, opponents state that technology ends up creating a bigger problem than the one we were trying to resolve in the first place. They truly believe that the benefits we could obtain are nothing compared with the damage we have caused. Sometimes technology is not even used to solve any problem, but merely to create one. Let’s use the nuclear bombs as an example, they are meant to destroy, to kill. Even if someone is able to survive after a nuclear bomb is detonated near where they are, they will probably be affected by mutations and severe genetic problems due to the radiation caused by the bomb.
In my opinion, technology is neither a blessing nor a curse; it’s both. What makes it change its position is how we use it. We can’t blame a nuclear weapon for the damage it produces; we blame the person who detonated it. It’s the same with everything else, computers, medicines, cars, planes… and even with simple things like pencils or pens. Everything is improvement; everything used technology to be created.
