Sports, school, politics, and work are a few places people are confronted with teams. When you look at any team you will probably see some form of communication happening. You might see a football player give a hand signal, a schoolmate chat on the phone, a senator give a speech, or an employee write a memo. The way you communicate is not important as long as you communicate well. Good communication is fundamental to a team being successful in any environment.
Everyone can communicate but the key to success it doing it well. Good communication in a team can keep from deadlines being missed, a player catching the winning touchdown, or a politician being voted into office. Speaking clearly does not mean that you are communicating well. If you are trying to communicate to a coworker that their behavior during your team meeting is not appropriate you would not be interacting well if you yelled at them, called them names, or told them that they are wrong. You are probably communicating clearly but you are hurting your team dynamics.
Creating successful communication in a team takes time and a conscience effort. Come up with an objective, define roles for every team member, and discuss what problems might arise. These steps help clear up any misunderstanding of what a team member is suppose to do. Write down a communication plan and communication rules. Writing down these rules will help the team establish what is expected of them and give accountability. If you feel a teammate has done something well tell them. When you hear that you have done something to please a member you will feel appreciated and want to produce more of those results. It is just important to have the team discuss short-comings of a teammate. Make sure you follow the communication rules when you discuss short-comings; the team has to be able to give feedback either negative or positive to each other.
