A simple definition is that leadership is the art of motivating a group of people to act towards achieving a common goal.
This definition, I think, captures the leadership essentials of inspiration and preparation. Effective leadership is based upon ideas, but won't happen unless those ideas can be communicated to others in a way that engages them.
Put even more simply, the leader is the inspiration and director of the action. He is the person in the group that possesses the combination of personality and leadership skills that makes others want to follow his direction.
In business, leadership is welded to performance. Those who are viewed as effective leaders are those who increase their company's bottom lines.
To further confuse the definition of leadership, we tend to use the terms "leadership" and "management" interchangeably, referring to a company's management structure as its leadership, or to individuals who are actually managers as the "leaders" of various management teams.
I am not saying that this is a bad thing; just pointing out that leadership involves more. To be effective, a leader certainly has to manage the resources at his/her disposal. But leadership also involves communicating, inspiring and supervising.
Is a leader born or made? While there are people who seem to be naturally endowed with more leadership abilities than others, I believe that people can learn to become leaders by improving particular skills. "Leadership is a winning combination of personal traits and the ability to think and act as a leader, a person who directs the activities of others for the good of all. Anyone can be a leader..."

Leading Leaders:
Leading Leaders’ primary focus is to create dramatically improved performance and life satisfaction for people, by helping them understand who they are first and then where they are

Leadership and Management are two terms that are often used interchangeably, or else used in very close relation with each other. But leadership is something that is difficult to define, because it is a word that can be defined in a number of different ways. Broadly speaking, however, leadership refers to the ability of an individual to influence a group of subordinate individuals to behave according to a certain manner, and the methods used to motivate those individuals to work together in order to attain a particular goal (Hughes, Ginnett, & Curphy, 2000, p.4). Leaders, in other words, are innovators, they are men and women of vision, who take risks to inspire and to do the right thing. Management, meanwhile, is more concerned with organization, efficiency, oversight of employees - the more day-to-day activities involved in the running of an organization and in making sure that the organization and its employees are doing things right (Hughes, Ginnett, & Curphy, 2000, p.8)…

There are many definitions of leadership. The Collins English dictionary defines leadership as “the leader(s) of a party or group.” Yet true leadership is much more than that. A leader can be the chief executive officer of an organization, or a first year employee who leads his or her team to success behind the scenes. A leader might lead through official authority and power, yet just as often great leaders lead through inspiration, persuasion and personal connections. Teaching others to be a leader is a daunting task within itself (Pankaew, 2013).…

In my opinion, leadership is more than just someone who can enlist the aid of others to accomplish a specific task. It is a characteristic and a lifestyle of a person. True leadership is not displayed on days we feel like it. It is a constant display of ones actions to accomplish tasks and set an example for others to emulate. A leader is someone who can be turned to in the absence of knowledge or direction and will either have the answer or know where to get the answer.…

Leadership and management are used interchangeably; however, distinct differences between the two exist. Leadership is defined as setting the direction for change; facilitating innovative practice, ensuring polices are up-to-date and professional standards are set in relationship to care (Feltner, Mitchell, Norris, & Wolfle, 2008). Leadership influences the processes within an organization, the essence of leadership is the ability to influence others. Leaders establish the purpose of the organization, whereas managers carry out the established purpose (Azaare & Gross, 2011). Management includes the process of planning, organizing, coordinating, and directing the work of employees to accomplish the task at hand more efficiently. Managing involves communicating and controlling the use of information to manage the work of others, leading people to take action, and taking supervisory actions (Sullivan & Decker, 2009).…

I believe that there is such a thing as natural born leaders that are innately gifted with the knack of leading others but most have to work extremely hard at it. Whether you’re born a leader or not, everyone can benefit from training and from consciously working to improve their effectiveness. Leadership skills can also diminish over time, as well. It requires constant effort to maintain proficiency, especially if you go long periods without leading anyone. Leadership improvement is a continuous process and the best leaders take an active role in developing it within themselves and…

Leadership is the capability to influence a person or a group to achieve many goals (Robbins, 2005). To elaborate, leadership is a complex process by which a person influences others to accomplish a mission, task, or objectives and directs the organization in a way that makes it more cohesive and coherent by applying their leadership attributes such as values, ethics, knowledge, skills, and belief (Clark, 2000). Most importantly, not all leaders happen to be managers, and not all managers are leaders (Robbins, 2005). Even though one is positioned as a manager or a supervisor (he has the power to accomplish certain tasks within the organization) it does not necessarily mean he is a leader unless he makes people…
