Conflict Resolution Strategies
People work in groups or teams everyday whether in their education, career or social setting. It is inevitable to have conflicts while working in teams. When taking a diverse set of people with different backgrounds, personalities, beliefs and put them together in a group, conflict whether negative or positive will happen. The key to achieving the team goals is to construct them while keeping the end result in mind. Conflict should end by thorough resolution techniques. Having a system for effective problem resolution, teams can ensure they are dealing with the most important issues as they occur and stay on target of attaining the goals with open communication.
Conflict is defined as “a state of open, often prolonged fighting; a battle or war. A state of disharmony between incompatible or antithetical persons, ideas, or interests. An opposition between characters or forces in a work of drama or fiction, especially opposition that motivates or shapes the action of the plot (AH Dictionary, 2008)” Conflict resolution strategies must be used for the team to be effective and meet the goals of their assignment. It is important to have team meeting in order to lay out potential problems and disagreements and prepare to support the team’s final decision (Weinstein, 2007).
Teams are made up of individuals with differences in opinions, beliefs and understandings. Following are some strategies used in conflict resolution, which may be successful in team dynamics. It is not uncommon for teams to run into problems, some of the problems are the lack of resources, attitudes, poor communication, lack of organization, and unclear goals and responsibilities. Teams need to put someone in a leadership role that has the qualities to solve particular problems.
