Andrew Carnegie once said, "Teamwork is the ability to work together toward a common vision. The ability to direct individual accomplishments toward organizational objectives. It is the fuel that allows common people to attain uncommon results." (Khurana, n.d.) Carnegie is credited as being one of the world’s most successful business men in the late 1800’s, and amazingly enough that philosophy still holds true today.
Teamwork is not a new concept in the workplace or out of the workplace. In fact, some of America’s greatest past times would not be successful, if it wasn’t for teamwork. “In football…a great quarterback is nothing without a great wide receiver, tight end, or offensive line that can keep him from getting sacked.” (DeJanasz, S.C., Dowd K.O., & B.Z. Schneider, 2002) Although the quarterback is often seen as the leader of the team, in reality without the team communicating the plays with one another, there would be chaos on the field. Sports and business teams are not much different. They are both groups striving to complete one common goal. The team dynamics are made up of many complex personalities and different communication skills in both groups.
“Team Dynamics are the driving forces in the makeup of a team. Teams collaborate and build relationships with others to get the job done and deliver high performance results.” (Hunter, 2007). Communication comes in many different forms, written, oral and even nonverbal. No matter what format the communication comes across as, the important thing is to share the message with all team members and make them feel as though they are part of the team. Each member of the team has something they can bring to the table to help accomplish that all important goal. Complex personalities and different communication styles make up the dynamics of the team, the team needs to embrace that diversity, highlight the strengths and don’t point out others weaknesses.
