Combine one-part five people, with one part electronic communications and equal parts of a project, and what is the result? The answer: either one successful project as a product of one great team; or a disaster due to communicative meltdowns. Teams are an essential part of our daily lives; all businesses—small and large, companies, schools and families have been drilled with the importance of teams and teamwork along with the fruitfulness of a successful team. What many lack however is the understanding of the fundamentals of what a team truly is, along with the single-most important factor that affects a team’s success and/or failure: communication. The following paper examines the concept of team communication as it pertains to face-to-face teams in comparison with virtual teams, highlighting the factors that may impede as well as facilitate successful communication, which would in turn lead to a successful team.
Defination of a team:
A team is a group of people that share a common goal with one another. Teams are an essential part of the working world. One person can bring a lot to the table but when sharing knowledge, ideas, and common goals between people a lot more can get accomplished. In team building an entity or a company would bring together people of several different backgrounds and thoughts on a project to achieve a task (Romando ,2006 ,para 1). Just bringing people together will never in its self build a team. In order for a team to function as a team and achieves its goal a team leader must be selected, in the corporate world that function would belong to management. Management must define objectives and clarify tasks as well as Identify inhibitors and remove those inhibitors so that the team can function and achieve the desired results (Romando, 2006, para 3).
