On Teaching
I believe that the school environment should be a nurturing and safe place for all children. I believe that schools should embrace the differences of all students and make the best effort to allow the students to feel comfortable and accepted. I also believe that each child is a unique individual who deserves a caring and stimulating environment in which to grow and mature emotionally, intellectually, physically, and socially. It is my desire as an educator to help students reach their fullest potential. With this, comes the ability to inform my students about how to access information from multiple sources rather than being the sole informer. Students should be given the opportunity to discover for themselves what makes them happy and they should also be provided with instruction that occurs outside the classroom in more natural settings. Helping students to develop a deep love and respect for themselves, others, and their environment occurs through multiple learning environments.
To me, the goal of public education is to better society as a whole. By providing an education to all citizens, we are preparing ourselves and our communities for a better future. In order to meet the goal of bettering society, the curriculum in our schools should be based on the basic skills needed to become literate, but at the same time focusing on the technological advancements of society. Teachers should make sure that they are giving each of their students a strong foundation in basic skills. Teachers should also be responsible for being up to date with the latest technology in order to better inform their students.
For me, teaching provides an opportunity for continual learning and growth. One of my hopes as an educator is to instill a love of learning in my students, as I share my own passion for learning with them.
