A Tale of Two Coaches
The text states, “Leadership is a process whereby an individual influences a group of individuals to achieve a common goal. From this perspective, leadership emergence is the degree to which a person fits with the identity of the group as a whole” A question that comes to my mind is concerned with who shapes and influences the identity of the group? It seems to me to be important in analyzing the case studies. Hiring a new department manager to serve a readymade team is different than hiring a coach to create and develop a winning basketball

In the case of Coach Knight, he appears to adhere to a management approach. He feels that being prepared to win is more important than winning. He values order, consistency, and structure. He also exercises control over team members and is quick to take corrective measures if he feels his recommendations are not being followed. Fayol (1916) claimed that the primary functions of management are planning, organizing, staffing and controlling. This definition seems to fit Bob Knight pretty well.
Coach Knight’s power base seems to be primarily legitimate power, a function of position power. As the coach he is the recognized authority. He may also have expert power based on his past performance as a player and coach. He also has coercive power in that he has the capacity to penalize or punish team members and seems to wield that power freely in some situations. Based on the case study, there may be a degree of referent power as part of his power base. There seems to be mixed responses and a good deal of controversy related to his leadership

The text describes a leader as one who creates and communicates a vision, builds teams, inspires and energizes and satisfies unmet needs of members of his team. He is not a man driven by rules as demonstrated by his own statement; “Too many rules get in the way of leadership.” He goes on to say, “I don’t want to be a manager... I want to be a leader…” He also demonstrates emotional intelligence when he explains that he is committed to, “spending a large percentage of his time getting inside a player’s head, understanding where the player is coming from and helping him to get where we all need to be as a

    After reading these three articles between how coaches and players do not get along with them attacking each other and when a player does something terrible and the coach defends them. We all have been in a situation where we do not want to be talked to by a family member or friend just because he had a bad day, but when you bring that attitude to a sporting event or practice sometimes the player or coach my lose their composure. Which happened in the three articles that I read, dealing with Latrell Sprewell choked his coach PJ Carlesimo during practice, coach Bobby Knight choked one of his own players Neil Reed, and when Rick Carlisle defended Ron Artest and other players he coached after the brawl in Detroit. In reading those articles I feel that they told me that there is either a bad, competitive, or good relationship between a player and coach. The one with Sprewell and Carlesimo, Sprewell who showed up to practice late that day choked his coach Carlesimo because Carlesimo wanted to know where he has been for being late. Although in the article it states that racial comments were said to Sprewell, but later found out that there were no such thing. So Sprewell was fired by the Golden State Warriors, the team he played for at the time, and was suspended by the NBA for the remainder of the season. In the article about Bobby Knight choking his player Neil Reed, it was halftime during a game when Bobby Knight was still coaching the Indiana University 's men 's basketball team and Knight was so upset with his players that the one player Neil Reed said something to Knight and Knight went after him and started choking him. After the news broke out about that incident the Indiana University 's President fined Bobby Knight $30,000 and suspended him three games. In the final article I read coach Rick Carlisle defends Ron Artest 's actions against the Detroit Pistons fan that threw a cup of beer at him and then Artest went after him in that brawl we…

    Coach Carter shows many qualities of different styles of leader ship throughout the movie. At the start when Ken first sees the basketball team he takes an autocratic style of coaching them. An autocratic coaching is where the coach has complete power over the team. Team members have little opportunity to put forward ideas or make suggestions. The benefit of this approach of leadership by Coach Carter is that it was incredibly efficient and his decisions are made quickly and the work gets done. This is displayed in the film effectively when he first walks into the gym and states that they must abide by this contract if they want to be apart of the team. Coach carter expresses his personal expectations and intent. “You can push up or shut up” he says to the team. This shows his autocratic coaching style in the film. Another important aspect of Coach Carter’s leadership style was respect. He stated that in order to gain respect they needed to give some. If this did not work with the players in the team, Coach Carter would have given up on his team, and would have left them with our victory. If there was no great success there was no point for the autocratic style of coaching, as the players would not bother putting up with the hard coaching sessions. Coach Carter shows a very caring attitude towards the players. He wants them to do well on the court and off. This the key to the autocratic style of coaching Ken delivers. The contract ken makes them sign says they must maintain a C+ in all classes and they have to sit in the front row of the class. If the team doses not abide by the contract they will not play. This is an autocratic style of coaching the team but realistically it’s for the best, he’s thinking of the team’s future in basketball and giving them opportunities academically. Through out the film Coach Carter says “to the base line” and blows his whistle. The coach makes the boys do 20 suicides and 250 push ups if they want to be apart…

    Mike Kryzewski (aka Coach K) has been the head coach of the Duke University’s basketball team since 1980. During this time he has lead his team with trust, respect, and close ties. He takes the time to understand his players, where they are coming from, and helps them get where they need to be. He believes in close communication and using eye contact to judge people’s feelings and let them see how he is feeling as well. He fosters very close relationships with players, inviting them to family dinners and is not afraid to tell the team he loves them. But he is not always so soft; there is another side to Coach K.
