“Taking Things for Granted”

Growing up all through life you hear people constantly telling you not to take things in life for granted. I was told that quite often as a child but I usually let it go through one ear and out the other. One day I was faced with the tragic, unexpected death of my uncle and then everything began to set in. I unfortunately learned the hard way to never take the love and family that you have in your life for granted because all of that could be gone in a blink of an eye.
I remember this day like it was just yesterday, it was September 12, 2008, a typical football Friday for Richlands High School. I was sitting in 7th period counting down the minutes until class was over but before class ended, Mrs. Webb, Our principle at the time, called over the intercom, “Chantell Cantrell, please come to the office you are checking out.” Confused as to why I was checking out I gathered my things and made my way to the office. When I opened the office door my father’s secretary, Melissa, greeted me with a weak smile. With a confused look on my face I asked her what she was doing and if everything was okay. She hugged me and nodded her head and told me that she was here to take me to my mother and father in Grundy. I knew in my heart that something was wrong but Melissa would not tell me anything.
The hour drive to Grundy felt like an eternity. When we pulled into the parking lot of Grundy Bellacino’s, my father was waiting for me by the door. I got out of the car and made my way toward him. When I got to him, I could tell that he was upset and that he may have even been crying prior to my arrival. He took me by my hand and led me around the back of the building where I met my mother sitting with her head down at a picnic table. I had a chill run down my spine and I knew that something bad has happened. I sat down across from my

We had never seen our mother in such despair; it was a shock to see our mother’s vivid emotions. My mother asked us if we wanted to see our father and we all replied “yes” and so she took all of us to see our father. However, my siblings and I went individually, but little did we know that what we were about to witness would shatter our hearts, feelings, souls, and…

Once again, I found myself wandering through the uncomfortable, brightly lit halls of the hospital. I was to find the room where my father was, an all too familiar task. "Room 443", I was told by my mother who had requested me to take my dad back to his apartment. Upon entering the elevator I let out a sigh of apprehension and turned to wearily push the button labeled "4". Whiffs of disinfectant products meandered themselves inside my nose while I looked around to see egg-white walls and nurses shuffling about in their bright, floral print scrubs. One of them approached me with a kind smile. "May I help you?" I briefly responded saying I needed to find my father, Charles Jolitz. "Go down the hall. He's in the last room on the left." Slowly making my way to the door, I speculated about what had happened to my dad this time. I entered the room thinking to myself, "Boy, he looks worse every time.", his salt and pepper hair ruffled, beard unshaven and a look of loss on his face. Though as soon as his eyes met mine, that face lit up and the corners of his mouth upturned into a smile. "My chickadee!", he exclaimed. I asked him how he was feeling and if it was time to go as the nurse carted in a wheelchair. All three of us made our way down to the lobby exchanging small talk. I dashed to my car, happy to be out of the dreariness that is a hospital. I hoped he would tell me why he was there yet again. Once in the car, he told me in a few words that he had had another episode due to taking his pain medication with a fifth of vodka and had lost control. He ended up dialing 911. My dad hurriedly changed the subject asking if I was hungry and if I would like to go have a burger. I let out another sigh. "I'm sorry, Dad. I'm not hungry, I've already eaten but I can take you to get one. We can go for lunch later this week." "Alright, sweetie.", said he. We arrived at his apartment complex and I walked him to his…

As soon as I walked through the front doors of Anderson High School, I knew my feelings and thoughts would fly around all over the place. It was almost like my stomach was turned completely inside out and all I could do was stare as people of all kind wandered to their first class. I did not know where to begin looking; I had just been here five days ago but my mind went blank as soon as I stepped foot inside. Eventually the school bell made a noise almost similar to something you might hear in a prison, alarmingly I about jumped out of my seat. Luckily I was not the only person who was caught off guard by this disturbing buzz. In came a man whose name I still can not pronounce to this day; he greeted us and my mouth almost dropped to…

So as I walk towards my mother’s room, all of these questions and thoughts create a tornado making me feel like throwing up. But I will do this. I will ask her and she will tell me. I sit on her bed and wait for her to talk. “Something you need?” she asks. I want to get up and leave now but I still want my answer. “I want to know why you don’t talk about my father and why I can’t see him, it’s been how many years and I still don’t know, and I think you shouldn’t keep this from me” She got up, went to her vanity drawer, and pulled out an envelope. She handed it to me and stood there waiting for me to open it up. I read the note, and walked out and sat in my room. That’s it. That’s all I need to know.…

I remember that cold November like it was yesterday. It was so cold that I felt the breeze going through my skin. I remember waking up to my mom and sisters crying. I can tell that my father was trying his hardest not to cry. I’ve always felt safe at home, it’s a place to feel peace and joy with family but this was different. I just wanted everything to be like the normal days where my mom fusses at me for not waking up earlier for school or forgetting to do the laundry. Everybody was so sad but trying there hardest to be strong in front of me. Everybody surrounded me as I was getting ready, it seemed like they were following my every move. I tried my hardest not to cry or just fall apart because I know that it would only make things worse and break everyone into pieces. I had to remain strong and remember that I’ve been through this before and that God is always by my side. Sitting on the dining table was pointless; the food was just there for show. Nobody seemed to have an appetite. It seemed as if they were the one going through this tragedy but I can’t blame them. If anything happened to them, I would feel the same way. I had left my house a billion times before but that morning was by far one of the hardest things I’ve ever done in my life. I kissed my sisters goodbye and told them to be strong for me and regardless of what happens, that they’ll always be in my heart. I have 3 sisters and not seeing there beautiful faces again would destroy me. Getting into the car was like moving to a new house. It was so quiet driving to the hospital with my parents. It was the longest drive of my life although I didn’t want the drive to end. I had to be strong though and remember that I am no longer 4 years old anymore. I was only 17 and I already been through this life trial before. Everything seemed to be playing in slow motion. I started to remember every childhood memory I had. I remembered the first time I…

It is amazing how many things we take for granted. We make plans for the day, and don’t think twice about how those plans can be taken away in the blink of an eye. I never thought as much about it myself, until I faced with the shock, and undeniable truth of my grandfather’s death. I don’t think anyone really thinks about tragedy until they are actually faced with shocking news. Of course at the time I was only 10 years old and the word death has never even crossed my mind even once. I remember I never really liked or even wanted to spend anytime with my grandfather, all he did was scold and punish me. However, I realize I will never be the same because after learning about his life, I regret not even getting to know him before his unfortunate death, just 5 minutes would’ve been enough.…

Walking into our home through the side door and in the rough the kitchen we yelled “mom were home.” Now making our way to the living room we noticed our father home from work, and next to our mother on the couch. Not needing to say a word we knew something was wrong. They both looked up, and told us to sit with them. My mother no longer was able to fight back tears and began to speak. Asking us how we would feel if daddy moved out for a little while; nothing permanent yet. We didn’t understand fully but we both began to cry.…

The story started when we decided to watch the pirate show. It was such an interesting show that it attracted hundreds of people. I was very excited at the admirable performance of the actors and the actresses. At the end of the show, everybody started to hustle. My sister and I were unconsciously shoved away from my parents further and further. When the show ended, I realized that Anna – my little sister – had disappeared. I thought that she must be with my parents. With a hope in my mind, I turned back to my parents. “Where is Anna?” asked my mom just as she saw me. I was filled with terror. “How could you leave your nine-year-old-sister alone among such a crowd?” my dad, who had never got angry at me before, said while we were looking for her. Because Anna did not have a cell phone and was too young to get back to the hotel by herself, I was afraid that we would not see her again. With a feeling of guilt, I was very nervous and going to cry. After many hours of searching, we hopelessly went back to the hotel. While my father was going to call the police, Anna surprisingly appeared. “Here you are, my babe,” my mom said emotionally, embracing her. We learned that she had been taken to the hotel by a kind-hearted lady.…

taken for granted, by me, are so many things. We don't plan for the unexpected things that occur from day to day. Then, in the blink of an eye, something horrendous happens and your life is never the same again. I was confronted with this when I received the shocking news, my breath was taken away and a sob was caught deep within my very soul. The unwanted yet undeniable words, telling me my cousin Johnny was dead. I so often seem to be immobilized by that moment. "He played life to the fullest, and without regret, he bet it all and braved the fall". For me, that is the day everything went wrong.…

I entered the house in panic, I yell out “Mum, Gretel, I saw him, I saw him!” but there is no answer. I look all around the house, but I can see no one. I decide to look in the place that I fear most, where my father died, in the basement. I retrieve the lantern that we keep upstairs and enter the basement. I creep down the stairs, slowly; I point the lantern around and softly call out to my mum and Gretel. I hear Gretel’s soft voice “Help” she says. I spot Gretel and shine the lantern on her, my mother is holding…

My boyfriend Jordan and I were home making chicken alfredo, one of my favorite dishes, when I heard a knock at the door. Who could possibly be at the door? No one ever visits me. I looked out the window and I see my mother's Yukon, so I thought it was my dad. He is the only person to ever “check” on me, so I opened the door and I saw my mother standing there. She stood there wearing her perfectly pressed , stainless work outfit and her hair curled to perfection. She looked tip-top like always, except I could tell something was wrong. Her mascara was a little runny and her eyes were red. The first thing that ran through my mind was that my uncle's (her brother) brain cancer was back. So, I let her in and I asked her what was wrong. She looked me in the eye with the face of extreme sadness and said,…

It is Saturday, September 17, 2011 at 1:00 am. I am watching a movie in the basement with Matt. My sister is fast asleep in her bed. My mom is looking over her mother, sleeping by her side. My dad is watching another show on The History Channel. The phone rings. My heart stops. Who could be calling at this time of night? What is wrong? Are Grandpap and Meemaw okay? Should I get the phone? Do I want to know? Moments later my father answers the phone. I wonder who called. I need to find out. I hesitantly go up the creaking staircase trying to reassure myself that my worst nightmare is not coming true. I must be overreacting. Obviously everyone is fine. There is nothing to worry about. As I reach the top of the steps, I take a deep breath and hope for the best. I go through the door. My eyes are frantically searching for my dad. I find him in his room. I ask him, “What happened? Who called?” A tear is streaming down his face as he slowly states, “Grandpap died.” While in a sweet, strong embrace, my father and I begin to weep tears of sorrow. The hole in my heart at the time inflicts sharp pains of grief and emptiness that will never be filled.…

We hang out watch movies and play a couple of games. The first time I’ve ever seen my father and got to talk with him. (Fast forward to September 16th, 2011) I wake up not wanting to go to school and just taking my time getting ready. I think to myself “if I skip school to go to my dad’s apartment for the day will he be mad?” I ponder on this for about an hour. I finally get the courage to say, “F it, I’m skipping school.” I go outside and start making my walk to school, but instead I walk to the bus stop. I get on the bus and I sit down, and we start driving towards Shawnee Kansas. While I was sitting there I got feeling that I shouldn’t go. I disregard that and carry on my way. The bus stops and I get this huge deep sinking in my chest. I run off the bus and runs towards his apartment. I get to the door and open it. I yell “dad, are you here?” No response… I look inside the living room and see feet over the couch. “Well I guess he isn’t home now” and pretend to leave. Still no sound… I walk over to the couch “Stop playing aroun…” I couldn’t finish my sentence. I see him laying there. No movement. No sound. No anything. I tried CPR, not knowing the exact way to do it. I finally hear a voice almost in my head. “Hey, bud I love you.” I stop not knowing what do to, I didn’t see his lips move. I don’t know what to do so I walk out and get on the next bus that comes and I…

I remember sitting in the waiting room for hours and hours.
