INTRODUCTION
In the paper below we will discuss an industry that has been positively and negatively affected by the advancements in technology. For this purpose we will take into account the travel and tourism industry that has changed over the years with globalisation and technological change. The industry has definitely been beneficial to some and not favorable to others, therefore in this paper we will critically analyze the pros and cons of the use of technology by this industry.
The travel industry has always been at the forefront of change and adaptation to innovation and engineering dynamism. If we go back a couple of centuries we would find history written by rail and road development and how it changed the lives of many people. Similarly the invention of the aircraft has given rise to one of the largest business opportunities in the world directly and indirectly contributing to significant rise in economic and social growth. Engineering design has made it possible for man to reach the moon and now space flights as a tourist option are being offered albeit only a handful of people have been able to afford the steep price tag. In a very evolutionary manner people have build roads, airports, railway stations and bus terminals all but to travel.
History from the industrial revolution onwards shows us that mechanical engineering played a significant role in shaping our lives from automobiles, to aviation, telecommunication, etc. However, in the last 2 decades and especially in the last 10 years the significance of electronic information and innovation and its very rapid impact on human life has been quiet dramatic. Globalisation has made the world a smaller place to live in and with technology people have become more aware of the different products available around the world. The travel and tourism industry includes the airlines, hotels, travel agents, the online travel agents (OTA), car rental etc.
